going to paint the calipers...

I see most people have already done this, did you take off the calipers to paint it? Afterwords you have to bleed the brakes correct? How many coats? Any suggestion on paint brands or kits appreciated as well.

i painted them temporarily with them on....but i am soon going to a shop and have them powder coated black at 25 a caliper...

It would be easier if you had them off and you would be able to do a better job cleaning and painting it with more room while it's off than on. What color are you going with, red, black?

It's easier and faster to do it with 2 people - get someone to stay in the car (provided it's stable), and push/release the brake pedal when you tell them to.

If you end up using the G2 Caliper paint, you may have to deal with the disadvantage of painting all of your calipers as once since the paint has to be used in a very short amount of time once it is activated. If that is the case (which it will be for me when I do it), you'll probably just let the entire system drain out, and then put all calipers back on and bleed them one at a time. It will take a bit longer than if you do one caliper at a time, but the process is basically the same. At least you will have a completely fresh fluid system for your brakes.

I used the Dupli-color caliber paint in black. They have held up pretty good for about a year, still has a nice shine and slean up real easy. I do have a little chip on one that happened when we did the pads.

+1 Dupli-Color Good directions and easy to use. No need to remove caliper, but it's easier to get at if you paint while doing a brake job and have the caliper loose.

An even easier way is to hook up a vacuum bleeder. One like this..

Idk if you can use this on the LS because of the ABS/traction control, but for 25 plus shipping, they work great.

I did duplicolor with the calipers on. Piece of cake. Of course, I did black. If I was doing a bright color I would probably want to take them off and do a quality spray job. I am very happy with the results I got out of the duplicolor kit. It looks great even if you get your nose under there for a close look.

I've done this with POR-15 red caliper paint kit about 2 years ago.
Other than a mechanical scratch, there is no problem whatsoever.
To do this, I disassembled the brakes assemblies, but I didn't disconnect
calipers. I used wire hangers to suspend the calipers in the air.
By the way, it's a three-step deal:
1. clean
2. prep
3. paint
So far I can say, it sticks very well.

I have not done my LS yet but on my Intrepid I also hung the caliper's by wire and sprayed them with the Dupli-Color Anodize look spray paint, cleaned them with oven cleaner. I used engine spray paint on my Fiero when I put new caliper's on, so those were already super clean.

I used the Duplicolor brush on kit with no issues. I took the front calipers off and left the rear ones on to paint them. I believe I put 4 coats on them.
