So we know that the 96 EATC that has the Gen 2 style buttons will directly plug into a Gen 1 and work. The 97-98 EATC will not work on the Gen 1. There is however a way to make it work. I had a two EATC's with the hard buttons from a 95. I wanted the 97-98 style, so what I did was take off the face from my 95.

The face is held together by these very small screws. You have to either find a very small nut driver, smaller than a 4mm, I never figured out what size it is, I used needle nose vice grips to get them off. Be very careful.

Once I got the face off, I did the same to the 97/98 EATC cover. Once the cover is off this is what the board looks like without the cover.

I then put the 97/98 cover on the 95 EATC and refastened everything. Everything worked like a charm. Here it is in the car.

why not just get a 96 eatc since it has the same face as a 97-98? you can buy them on ebay for nearly nothing.

You can do that, but for me, I had three EATC's sitting around, and I decided to experiment. 96 EATC's are not always available, and I've seen them on Ebay for around $80. I don't know how other junkyards are around the country, but I can pick up EATC's here for around $20 all day long.

i have swapped faces in the past too, when i had to! i still have a few 95 hard button faces in my tool box from swapping out faces!
