GEN 2 with LSD?

Here's a quick tip:

If you do this mod, and you need any type of work done at a shop that will have to road test your car, it's a good idea to let them know of this. My mechanic got a little surprise when he tried a rather quick U-turn on a lightly wet road.

Very true. It goes sideways very scary fast and with little throttle when wet.
 
I researched the Ford 8.8 Traclok and they no longer manufacture the 28 spline Traclok units. So reman or salvage appears to be the only way to get one, unless you can find one someone who still has one in stock. I couldn't, the sites say they have them but I ordered 4 different ones and they all called with 'sorry, that part has been discontinued'.

I will be getting a used traclok and having it rebuilt this winter. Last summer I ordered new axles/half shafts, axle nuts, and new rear wheel bearings for this mod. It just got put on the back burner for a bit.
 
So I should take that 8.8 that I have at home and toss it in huh?

The 90's Rangers also had the 8.8 diff......... some with limited slip/trac lock.

Edit: These guys are also pretty good at getting the parts for the rebuild/knowledge if you run into trouble with it.

I wonder why you couldn't just drop a 31 spline 8.8 out of a ranger into the LS housing and be done with it? From the pics, thinking housing clearance issues on the non-capped side. Or maybe it's because the pin location is different between the LS 8" and the 8.8" LSD so you'd need different length shafts.

The 31 spline 8.8 LSD uses beefier spiders, pin and spring but the same bearings as the 28 spline version. The guts don't swap, been there...

you can also get 28 spline side gears for that 31 spline unit. or could. i've seen a st for sale.

That's a very good point and now I understand why Lincoln used an open diff.

EVERY single rwd vehicle I have owned has had limited slip, and after driving my LS around in the snow, I find it extremely frustrating that I can't get the rearend to kick out around corners, but this is obviously not a characteristic that Lincoln wanted the car to have.

Turn off the TC and push the loud pedal enough and the rear end will kick out. Been there, done that. Spun the V6 on an autocross once or twice..... Almost spun the V8 a few times.....
 
From my understanding, an LSD wasn't necessary since this isn't a sports car and it has traction control/advancetrac.

I will have to wait for some really slick roads. I swear I can climb a waterfall with the snowtires I bought. Extremely impressed, slightly bored lol..

oh yeah. i've drifted a V8 sport through a few roundabouts. she'll slide just fine.

BTW, what's up with these roundabouts popping up all over the place? We just got two new ones installed. They are such a pain! They tried a couple of painted ones a while ago but have since painted proper lines!
 
After catching up on this thread, has anyone put LSD into a Gen II Carrier? Forum members have been putting LSD into the Gen 1 Carriers for several years now. Can someone summarize all the LSD options available for Gen II cars?

Like installing Gen 1 into a Gen II car: Changes needed? Axles? Drive Shaft? Mount changes?

What it takes to put a 8.8 Corbra/Mark VIII, or 8.8 Explorer into both a Gen 1 and Gen II

its been tried, it wont happen.

a little searching would have shown this and is why people with 2nd gen are buying 1st gen carriers, its surely not because we like buying extra part... (not really any searching, more reading since the two biggest rear end threads were linked on the very first page)

Ahh yes, the roundabout. One of the most efficient and safest means of an intersection when people know what they're doing.

My first experience was on a family vacation in Pennsylvania when I was about 17. My dad got stuck in one for at least 10 minutes trying to figure where we needed to go! I hadn't seen one since until they tried a painted one a few years back; at least I think that's what it was. They have since painted normal lines! In The People's Republik these things are new.

The main intersection here in the 'Gola is a decent sized one lane roundabout surrounded by parking lots. There's a few back home in SE Michigan that are 2-3 lanes that get a little tricky.

Yea, this one was 3 lanes. He got in the middle and couldn't get back out!
 
I live in the country, they just put one up a few years back just up the road. The school is right there with 2 major highways intersecting there too....out in the middle of the country....I still hate it.

I know of one up between Madison and Dubuque area, and Waterloo Iowa has had a bunch installed.
