gen 1's & Daytime runing lights ( DRL's )

Gen 1's didnt come with any type of DRL's of any kind did they?


I found kits for DRL's but I not positive how the car would react to them. If I go with high beam DRL's I would like to still run my fogs in really bad situations and I know the LS will not allow this since the fogs turn off with the high beams turning on + it is not street legal do to the amount of glare but since the kits dim the high beams is there a way I could get it to work. I am assuming it would then be legal do to the reduction of glare. My highlander allows the use of fog lights with both DRL's and high beams but they use a low beam bulb in the fogs where we use a more high beam ( or similar ) type of bulb.

it's law in Canada and the LSes there did have them - however - I do not believe anyone has figure out the PCM switch to enable the feature in a non-Canadian car....

Right, but this is some plug and play kit with some converter. To be honest its pretty confusing, but again knowing how tight assed the LSes PCM is I was weary about it working out.

Its pretty weird that the cars in Canada have them but the PCM still cant be hacked on this subject.

I was just asking since there are many different types of DRL's besides the most common everyone is aware of which is the high beam DRL's most commonly found in today's vehicles. Cars for years have run on turn signal DRL's. This site has kits to convert anything that produces light up front into a DRL but the site is kind of shady.

I don't believe any dealer will do this - I think they:
- first have trouble getting non-US PCM codes
- make the vechile 'not supportable' in the US - meaning the next dealer that see they car will be stuck
- could be a warranty / liability issue
- could play havoc with things like the odometer - kms vs miles.... etc

Maybe a SCT tuner could simply provide a XCal with a Canadian code base if SCT has the Canadian codes...?

the LLSOC has used a Euro PCM code that allows 1st gear in SST mode on Gen1s - works for some cars.

why not just disconnect your highbeam plugs and install the new ones with their own switch that either comes on with ignition, or a switch in the car, or with the parking lights. pretty easy using relays. shouldnt throw a dash light unless you turn your high beams on. you could put something on the stock high beam plugs to simulate a load if your scared of a dash light coming on (try superbrightled.com). not sure if you want to retain the highbeams. i never use mine so id disconnect them.

I guess I take them for granted....lol....I have actually unplugged my DRL's...(which means I have unplugged the highbeams)....I hate them..I run on my after market fog HIDs and my Angel eyes only...When I have my aftermarket headlight HIDs on..they are alot bright than the high beams anyway. I just hate the way they look.

I had the high beams run as DRL's for a while but I changed it back to stock. I decided I didn't like the look. Let me try to dig up some old pictures of how it looked for those of you that have never seen an LS with them. The DRL's were just the high beam bulbs at 6.5v.
