Hey guys im to stupid i can't figure out my gas mileage. i'am in canada so yeah having trouble with the metric system. But anyways i waited till my tank was almost empty i put 18 Litres. Resetted the trip system too 0 and at about 102 km the gas light thingy came on. Whats my mpg? It seems good.:shifty:

Not filling up completely and to the same level every time will give slightly different results.

If you added 18L before the gas light thingy came on, you don't know how much gas was still in the tank. Even if the gas light thingy came on, it doesn't always come on at the same gas volume. It is just a simple float that is sensitive to acceleration, turns and ground level.

So unless you have a calibrated 18L tank you can use, that is probably the worst method.

A better method is to fill up the tank til it clicks off. Then drive as usual and then fill up again at the same pump etc and then calculate. It will be closer to actual but still lots of variables to throw you off.

Your mileage computer is probably most accurate for day to day use.

Other things such as traffic, temperature, weather, road conditions(hills, turns etc) your driving style will cause the mileage to vary. Without laboratory conditions you may never get the real mileage and even then it will change every time you drive in the real world.

One thing I do is keep a log book and chart the average mileage per page. Over many months you will start to see a running average that is pretty close. When the running average changes significantly, then something is wrong(tuneup?) or your drive changed.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Well it was basically empty put 18 litres and then went empty again.... it was very close to empty. Is there anyone who could figure it out for me? I dont drive crazy so i guess thats why its good. It seems its pretty good too me.

well, 102 km using 18L of fuel gets you roughly 13 miles per gallon. That seems really low.

couple of conversions for you:
1 gallon = 1.61 liters
1 mile = 3.79 kilometers

you must convert the metric numbers to english numbers before attempting to figure out your miles per gallon number. Unless you want to know your LpKm (liters per kilometer) then you simply divide the numbers.

102km = 63.35 miles
18L = 4.75 gallons

63.35 miles/4.75 gallons --> 13.3 miles per gallon

class dismissed.

You got that one backwards buddy.
1 gallon = 3.79 liters
1 mile = 1.61 kilometers

but the answer was correct.

Here's one I didn't know. There are two definitions of a gallon. The US version and the UK version. Now why would the UK have their own definition of the gallon? We dont use an alternate definition of the liter.

It is funny/ironic that an American would assume that the UK has "it's own" definition of the gallon. In fact, it is the USA that has created it's own definition of the gallon (the British definition has been around many centuries longer). Everyone else in the world who uses or who has ever used the "imperial" system of measurement, uses or used the Imperial (British) gallon. The US has its own unique system of measurement.

Anyway, back on topic, the metric system uses L/100km (litres per one hundred kilometres, and yes they are spelled that way) rather than km/L. The OP got roughly 18 L/100km, which is very bad. I average 12 L/100km, but get around 8.7 L/100km on the highway (lower is better obviously). To convert L/100km to MPG or vice versa, take 235.2 and divide it by the one you have, and you'll get the other one.

e.g.
18 (L/100km) is 235.2/18 = 13.07 (MPG)
and
13.07 MPG is 235.2/13.06 = 18 (L/100km)

To get L/100km in the first place, take the litres used, multiply by 100, then divide by the km driven.

touché salesman

I have always (incorrectly) assumed the gallon to be one of those strange "English" units that we use here in the states. (WTF is an inch anyway, and why are there 12 of them in a foot and 5,280 of those in a mile.... it makes no sence)

So what #'s you are getting because i know im getting better then 13.4mpg. Or maybe my information is not accuarte because you never know how much is left in the tank. What is a good way to figure it out. Fill up the tank and see how far it will go till the gas light comes on? Because my car was almost empty then i filled it up 18l's then the gas light came on thats where i stopped there is usually alot of gas left still when the gas light is on. Im just going to fill up my tank and see my mileage. All i know it gets better gas mileage then my turbo eclipse which is just a 4cylc. i think i just fuked up my calculations:(

Btw eclipse was 15mpg. So yeah this car seems good on gas i just use $40 a week and i drive alot 300-500km a week

Fill up the car.
Then drive 100 km.
Refill the car.
This will be more accurate than
doing it from an empty tank.
This is how many liters you used for 100 km.
Then use the formulas above if you want mileage
instead of literage (is that a word?)

on way it to put it plainly like this, fill the car up and reset the trip odometer, drive and whenever u fill up record the distance you traveled (which in your case is km's) and record how much you filled up (registered on the gas pump, and also in Liters) and then use the above equations and figure out from there

Lol. True but we do use an alternate spelling! liter = litre. O yeah and an inch is part of the old imperial system. 1 inch = 25.4 mm.

Thanks, that is much more accuarate.

the most popular theory is that the inch is the width of an average man's thumb at the nail. How 12 of them make up the foot I have no idea. Probably has something to do with the king's foot size whenever it was decided what an inch was. the mile has something to do with walking 5000 paces. just dumb. the whole world should be using one system.

by the way, 18L is roughly 1/4 of a tank of fuel. If that's all you're squeezing into an empty tank you've got problems.
