Gas Fumes and Bad Hose

So my girlfriend has mark viii from like 1997. Recently she has started to smell gas fumes coming form her AC unit so strong that she will have to roll the windows down. This has only occurred this summer when it has been hot, 100 F ++. THe times it has happened the gas level has been at about half a tank and she has not filled up recently. I could not find anything leaking under the car or near the rear. I then opened up the hood and found that a hose had been chewed threw. So three major questions:

1) Do any of you know what might be causing the gas fumes being brought into the cab?

2) Do you know what the hose is connected in the picture and what the silver cylinder the hose used to be connected to is and what it does? Images below.

3) How and where could I get this hose fixed. Thanks Everyone.

Yeah, I'm not sure why you'd be smelling gas though....

That's just a vacuum line to make the fuel pressure regulator perform it's job. Unless it's failed, there wouldn't be any gas coming out of it...

Maybe someone else can give you better info.
 
I bet the smell is coming from the evap system at the back of the car.
Had the same thing happen last year when i drove out to Denver.
Only did it one other time, seemed to be the right amount of fuel at the right speed turned the right way to get a good slosh of fuel.
Smelled it through the ac, when i popped the hood... No smell, only at the back of the car. And I checked the evap system up and down. Nothing
 
So I guess the big question is is the car still safe to drive until I get this problem fixed or should it be fixed right now?
 
You do need to fix the vacuum line on your fuel pressure regulator, looks like you.might have a few to replace on that intake.
I'd take a look at the evap tray. You can always pull the passenger side wheel well out and check the fuel lines too.
I've seen a fpr go bad and leak fuel out of the vacuum port but you would see that I would thing.
 
The problem is I am at college, OU Boomer Sooner, and her family lives in the Dallas area 3 hours 200 miles away. They really want to take it back there and have there mechanic work on it. I am just wondering would it be safe to drive that far? It is a little bit difficult to drive when your car files up with fumes. Thanks guys for the help, means a lot.
 
Your PCV lines are split and need to be replaced. Never seen a set that bad before. In addition to replacing those I would bet your EVAP line is off or split. Look behind the intake tube and slightly below the throttle body. See if that hose is cracked or broken.

The intake sucks the gas fumes back into the motor to help with emissions via that EVAP line. Having that bad of a vac leak like your car has from the PCV lines could allow for fumes to escape that way as well.

I would seriously consider replacing all the rubber vac lines and fittings.
 
It's just a good idea just always replace those hoses when dealing with an older car..coolant hoses and the serp belt should be changed periodically as well :)

Which ones are the PCV lines? Thanks so much for the help. As you can see I am not much of a car guy, especially when it is not mine.
 
The PCV lines are the two lines that come off the side of the plenum and merge into one and feed a small plastic valve on the drivers side valve cover. Those need to be replaced and i would bet the PCV valve is bad as well.
 
And it's even one of those super cheap and easy like an air freshener kinda why the hell nots
