Fuel Pump Removal?

Did a quick search for fuel pump stuff and didn't see much in the way of removing the fuel line clips.

This would be for the driver side pump, not jet pump on a 2002 ls v-8

any help is appreciated.
 
yes cammerfe, that is correct sorry about the misscomunication, so how does the pump actually come out. I looked and saw the detailed photos but it is not for a 2002. My actual unit does not pull out with the top section any help is appreciated.
 
You should find that after getting the back seat bottom and the 'plug' out of the way, there's a plastic ring much like a fruit (Mason) jar lid assembly slightly below floor level. Use a dead-blow hammer or equal and a screwdriver for a 'drift' and unscrew the hold-down ring. Lift this arrangement out and find the fuel pump attached to the underside---down in the tank.

Wear leather gloves if possible when twisting the ring for removal...

Trust me on this (I replaced mine @ 175,000 miles,(207k)), there are tiny sharp edges from the manufacturing process that can rip the skin in the openings for the fuel & jet pumps.
You will need a fuel line connector tool also to properly remove either without breaking the elbow tubes.:cool::steering

You can rent fuel line removal tools from parts stores, but IIRC there is a "trick" to doing it without them..
 
I got the lines off easily enough after playing with them,


And for gloves yeah they would have been helpful the sheet metal is damn sharp and there's little room to grip the line without slicing yourself.
 
well replaced the fuel pump all three strainers, fuel pump relay and the pressure still drops what the :q:q:q:q is going on
 
by the next day there is no fuel pressure at the rail but it will start right up, no cranking at all
 
well it will start jerking real bad and then die it only happens when I have driven the car a little bit. I know its not coils, I have a fuel pressure gauge and its all over the place when it acts up.

There is a fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail. It reads pressure relative to manifold vacuum. The PCM reads the sensor. The PCM then communicates with the REM to tell it to give the fuel pump more or less power. In this way fuel pressure is controlled.

I would put a scan tool with live sensor read out on while driving with the mechanical fuel pressure gauge. You would want to look at the fuel pressure sensor, MAP sensor, and fuel pump PWM percentage. From there you should be able to figure out what is going on. Don't discount the possibility of a marginal coil causing electrical noise that confuses the fuel pressure sensor. It could also be that a component in the REM is bad and is overheating.

how much is a new rem, and I would imagine that is definitively dealer only

There's no reason to jump to conclusions without doing diagnosis. It may even just be the jet pump. Don't guess at it. Get the correct equipment and do the diagnosis, or take it to someone who has the right equipment and will do the right diagnosis. Also, I would think that you could get a working REM from a junkyard for a reasonable cost.

I'm not jumping to conclusions, although i do have the mat from office space...

I looked at the jet pump, what are the parts on it, I replaced the sock on it when I did the fuel pump and socks... Is there any servicing or anything I can do at home or is it a replace only part?
 
The jet pump has what looks like a small barrel mounted to the "body" of the jet pump and then another barrel so to speak with a funnel shaped bottom what are these and what may they do.

Apparently, one of them is a filter of some sort, and when it clogs you get problems like yours. I did a little research and found one guy with symptoms similar to yours. His problem was solved by changing out the jet pump (after he threw a ton of other parts at it). He indicated that his jet pump was very gunk'd up and its filter clogged. Of course, your problem may be something else.

I am assuming though that the jet pump can not be taken apart at all or that filter replaced with a standard small in line filter. what about doing away with the filter, seeing as there are 3 other ones. plus a regular filter up stream.
