Hello all,

Have been lurking on these forums extensively for the past 2-3 weeks. Purchased a high mileage (170K) 01 LS V8 on the cheap but it needs a little TLC.
It came with the CEL light on and an independent mechanic determined the cause to be leaky injectors (also seem to get the same hard warm start issue as other folks here). OBDII gave codes P0172 and P0175 (Bank 1 and 2 runnning rich).

With the high mileage, I'll probably just replace all 8 injectors in one shot and have narrowed down the choices :

1) Brand new direct replacements (Motorcraft) ~ $80 ea
2) Brand new replacement (Accel) ~ $50 ea
3) MotorMan recond XW43-9F593-CAs ~ $24 ea
4) Used injectors (junkyard Grade A stock) ~ $200 (for 8 with rail)
5) Option #4 but with professional reconditioning (by eg. RC Engineering) for additional ~ $15 ea

This thread has some useful info / part numbers : http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=18848

I was wondering what are your opinions on the options above. The mechanic quoted me ~$1300 for 8 brand new injectors and workmanship, which sounds too high to me.

Option #2 is a little confusing as I can't find much info on the Accel fuel injectors and they don't seem to have one with the same 19lb/hr rating as the direct replacements (closest I found were 17lb/hr and 21lb/hr). Ohmage seems to be a little off as well (14.4 for Accel vs. 12 for direct replacement).

Have already taken care of other things (transmission flush, COPs are fine, oil change to Mobil 1 0W-30, Puralator air/oil/fuel/cabin air filters, replacement key fob).

Many TIA!

$1300 is a crime - get some buddies and beat him with a sack full of soap bars.....

It is not that hard to swap them yourself - if in fact you believe that is the issue - although these injectors are not a common issue. Here is how to remove the intake manifold - > http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tech/Lincoln-LS/V8-intake-manifold-replacement/

the injectors simply pull out once you remove the fuel rail bolts.

Figured as much about the $1300. How much does workmanship on something like that usually run at say an independent mechanic and stealership?

I haven't gotten the cost breakdown from the guy (the quote was for 8x new Delphi injectors), but I guess he might have just plugged in MSRP for them (~$130 from looking around on Google). If that's the case, it's not so bad since I can get brand new replacements for ~$80 each.

I have previously been servicing a 98 Chevy Cavalier (yeah, heckuva ride upgrade! :P ) there and his prices have always been fair.

If you were to decide to go in the direction of Accel, be very careful. Your car uses an injector style that adds air at the injector. I don't believe that Accel offers that type.

Before you go buying coils shoot a PM to our members Mrzeee (Max at Five Star Ford), or TeamFord (Bill at Team Ford) and ask them for some prices on those. They'll hook you up with a discount for LVC members.

Thanks for all the replies so far folks! Forgot to ask - what ATF would you guys recommended since I'm getting my transmission flushed?

Mercon V is what the 5R55 calls for. Transmissions are a bit pickier than engines are when it comes to lubrication. Sometimes what is good for one transmission is bad for another, so its best not to play around with different fluids. I would think just about any brand should do, though Motorcraft would probably be the least expensive.

D*mn, these forums are invaluable! Since the LS is spec'ed as using MERCON V (IINM a synthetic blend), is there any noticeable benefit to using a full synthetic?

If so, I guess it would boil down to a choice between Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and Royal Purple Max ATF, though the Mobil 1 is a little confusing - they used to have a MERCON V label, whereas now it's a "New Formulation" label that doesn't specifically say its MERCON V approved, just suitable for use :
