So yeah... the front bags finally gave up... I think the ND roads up there tore them apart... so I was just curious what I'm looking at for fixing them... i guess I'll go with the 1.5 lowered coils... but how much are they?... I know to get them from American struts... but what kind of money should I be lookin at payin for them... and if I went with bags are they expensive to replace?... what's my options?

I don't know why everyone is so quick to go to coils. The difference in price for front coil kit and two new air struts from American Air is $18 shipped and $101 for the lowered kit. Is everyone that cheap? If the roads are bad where you live you might want to rethink the lowered kit though. Not that there is anything wrong with the Eddie's kit but I know a could people in NY with that kit that hate the ride and bottom out with the crappy NYC roads.

most people are quick to jump to coils because even if you buy brand new bags they'll do the same thing they are now in another 5 years anyway, coils will never leak. for some people, its more practical to put coils in, there is nothing wrong with going to coils, specially if you drive the car alot and hard, the air ride just doesnt like to last.

Well that is true for the most part Jamie, being a person thats been around a while it doesnt hurt to do maint on the bags when you wash the car.

I personally use tire protectant/shine from McGuires on my bags to keep them moist, Thats the secret to a long trouble free life. Dry rotting is the enemy of any rubber. I had the same bags on my truck for 3 years and I know the owner now hasnt changed them out so alltogether 5 years and still look new.

well i dont know about mcquires but its been proven that armor all actually deteriorates rubber, its worse for your tires and dash than you think! not only that but on the bags of the mark VIII, the crakcs develope where the bladder is folded over itself so you cant spray anything on them in that area anyway unless you turn the air ride off and jack the car up.

+1,and they are nice when they work, but the time will come in the not too distant future when they won't, then you have to decide what to do-in addition, when it happens, unless you can do the repair yourself, it is expensive to fix-and, bottom line, it is so not a 'daily driver' while this is going on. If I had to depend to go from A to B, I'd probably eventually just do coils, one less headache IMO-me, I just go on ebay and get cheap used, and put them on when I need them-cheap being the operative word-one front strut has 2 years on it (less than $100 inc. shipping) and the other front has been on for 8 months now-$80 total on that-so I spent less than $180, and when they go, I'll park it and look again for new 'used' struts...and if the module freaks out, the pump goes south...coils, maybe, why not? then, I'll be done with it...I am not a purist, and I like the ride now, but sooner or later, it has to be a consideration.

Genuine Ford bags last just fine. It's all these aftermarket bags that are having people replacing stuff every couple of years, when a quick call to Max will yield a solution for the better part of a decade.

Ya I know abou amor-all and I run for the hills instead using that stuff.

the alcohol in armour all dries out the rubber. i sell some armour all products in my vending machine. but i tell my customers that it is there because people buy it. and i would not put it on my car as long as you have a silica base product it will actully condition the tire rubber

Yah, I remember the Craigslist ad posted here a while ago with the dude that had ArmorAll'ed his bags every 3000 miles. Terrible, terrible idea.

I've always wondered about silica. Good to know.

'Cause these cars are old enough, that "everyone" on the board nowdays is people who paid 1k for their car. They have no money, and they never saw the car in all its glory, so they think of it as a thunderbird. You can always tell when you see a mark viii owner, and they're the kind who aren't true enthusiasts. They bought it cheap, think it kinda looks cool, don't really do much to the car, and either duck their head when they notice how nice a mark viii can really look on the road, .. or come up at the gas station telling you how nice your car is, acting like your friend, pointing out their custom painted grille, etc. And I always think, 'get lost, junk your car, and let it rest in peace you cheapass.'

Mine's 13 years old. I've driven between Houston and Minneapolis 14 times, been through 11 states and 147k mi with the car, and it was never more than 2" off the ground the whole time. All I've replaced is the compressor. That's not bad..

Some people think, "these cars are old, who cares" .. but really, any car, is only as old as the parts that are in it. Guys in BMW's and Corvettes tell me how nice the car is. ..You'd think they'd scour, cause it's old, right?.

My Mark is immaculate, runs great, and I baby it-I do not beat it, have fixed any weakness it has, and I get compliments on it all the time-I have friends lined up ready to buy it, should I ever want to sell it (actually I have a bunch of cars that are like that and I could sell them to friends who know I am a car fanatic)-that being said, I still think that I would keep air as long as I did not need it as a DD, it's better with air suspension than it is with coils since it was designed that way-but if I had a 9 to 5 job, and needed it to get me to work on time, I might do coils if I had to depend on it.

That doesn't make it a Tbird, it is still a Mark, a much nicer car IMO.

Well put Jamie..

Meguares is a Sillica based product, thats why I use it, keep the rubber conditioned and it will not fail you.

..Maybe I've just had GREAT luck, I've had problems with the air, but it was always a quick troubleshoot and easy cheap fix, and it's been pretty reliable.

I think it'd be more work to change to coils than the combined maintenance of the air that would be needed to have it last another 15 years.

Same here. I've had a Mark VII which has separate struts on the front but Apart from having to replace bags most people don't seem to have problems.
