Want to know if there is a post about what to look out for and what should be replaced. She's a single mom looking for a nice safe car on the cheap.

I really like both of my LS's. However, they are not inexpensive to maintain. If she is looking for cheap transportation, I strongly suggest she look elsewhere.

Make her get a ricer...so many girls get ricers because of reliability and since she's a single mom it would be hard for her to get things fixed unless she's loaded. Luncoln are great for luxury and on par for good performance but if she wants to have a moneypit then the LS is a good choice for her

get a carfax on that thing too! I had to get a new engine only about 2 months after I bought mine at 74k miles

she needs a nice car and I hate to recommenced ricers, Just looking at what needs be taken care of before purchase, things that go bad that can be seen or found out during a test drive. She likes the looks of the car and some I pretty good with a wrench.

Volvo's are a chick car very safe and reliable. that or a VW or Audi....they all have been voted top female piks

From what I have seen, Volvo's are very expensive to maintain also.
A low cost, safe, non-ricer car would be a Mercury Grand Marquis or Ford Crown Victoria.

If will help if you can do some/all of the mechanical work. However, you should be warned that most of the parts for these cars are very expensive. Even the tires can be quite high (A set of four OEM or better are over $800.)

I'm not trying the talk the car down, as I said I am happy with mine. However, I can afford to maintain them. If I were on a more limited income, I would have to pick something else.

Ok I get it, I'm a mark VIII guy sorry. 8 post and nothing on what I should look for?!? The way you guys sound, its like talking me out of the car.

for example things to look for on a mark VIII

Foggy head lights - cracked lens, can be expensive new can be found used
Sagging / low sitting car - one of several things could be bad, valves, suspension comp, bad manifold. Part are available new and used
Steering wheel grind - they all do that its normal.
Etc. Etc.

I would agree with everyone above but even with the few known common problems the LS is a very reliable car and definitely cheap now days. Very safe too. I doubt that your friend will be pushing it's power train, electronics, breaking, tires etc. like most of us probably do, so I vote yes get it.

I've had my 04 v8 for almost 3 years and the only problem I have had is with coils. 2 or 3 get replaced per year but that's at Fords cost since the coils are still under their warranty.

BTW, (sorry phreakness for getting off topic) what the heck is a ricer? One of these?

tell her to get an ex-patrol car (crown vic)... Those are sweet, fast, cheap, easy as balls to find replacement parts for cheap. Not to mention it is a tank

Ball joints, window regulators, coils, valve cover gaskets, degas bottle & cap, leaky headlights/tail lights, sway bar bushings, end links (front & rear), wheel sensors, leaky injectors & clock spring are some of the common problems with a 2001 V8 that she will most likely have to deal with if they have not already been fixed.

Did I miss any thing?

Can the seller give you a list of items that have been fixed?

Is it a perfect car? No, but closer than most. Does it have excessive maintenance/repair costs? My opinion is still - No.

Here's the dead the Lincoln is a good second hand car. If she can afford or deal with any problems down the road (Every car has it's poroblems) and if she becomes part of this group to help her with these problems then she's good as money but if she's not gonna get second opinions on repairs or anything that needs fixing and just take it to the stealership then talk her into a different car. Plus having you as a friend and I'm sure working on your mark would assist in some aspect. So probs to her for the LS. Plus it would be good to see another LS girl....unless the's like..Old Old....

cause here in WA we got A LOT of hot single moms...hell half the girl I've come across on match.com are single moms :P

i have no doubt about it. Got it on with this sweet MILF 2 weeks ago and she was the TIGHTEST i have had so har....completely suprised. Funny thing is she was only on match.com to get back at her ex so I was pretty much used but what do I care? I got somethin out of it..all that matters....

Seems like Hawk was the only one to really address the OP's question. Issues I have dealt with first-hand.

Coils are a big issue, due to oil leaking in. Ask seller if they have ever noticed this, or maybe you can even take a look at the coils before you purchase. Causes car to misfire and run uneven. Many here have purchased a full set of 8 from ebay for well under $200. Ask seller if they have ever noticed this, or maybe you can even take a look at the coils before you purchase.

The valve cover gaskets are not too hard of a DIY job with the right tools and patience. I believe the passenger side gasket cost me under a hundred dollars.

Window regulators are notoriously bad. Once you replace one, its not a bad DIY job. There is a very good write-up on here and you can find the regulators on ebay for less than at the dealership.

Sway bar bushings eventually harden and lead to a loud clunk from the front of the car. Easily replaced with Energy Suspension bushings (about $25) and installed by yourself or a repair shop.

Leaky headlights can be resealed with RTV sealant or you can easily buy a replacement set; same goes for the tail lights.

Like any used car purchase, just look over the car very carefully and maybe even have a trusted, 3rd-party mechanic take a look at it. Its insane the kind of deal you can get nowadays on an LS compared to when I purchased mine 3 1/2 years ago. For the looks, ride, luxury features and price right now, I dont think she can go wrong.

Any car will have its fair share of problems, you just have to have a good source of information (like LVC) and some common sense not to always rely on someone else to repair your car.

in fact (not to hijack the thread too much) but here's a bunch of MILFs in my area from match.com :-D

Also, as far as parts go, try calling local dealerships and see if they will match online prices, which are usually cheaper. Tasca Ford is usually the best.

When I was looking to replace my shocks, I was (accidentaly) transferred to a Ford body shop outside of the dealership and a rep there informed me the online prices I had were all at cost+10%. I asked if he could beat it and he agreed to match it and I should figure not paying shipping charges as my additional savings. Works for me! Needless to say, theres only one place I go for OEM parts now.
