i have a 1993 Mark VIII i want to know if there are any free mods i can do for horsepower or to generally make my car run better even fairly cheap mods like 100$ or less... please help! thanks

Tune up. Filters, plugs, wires, fluids etc. You will be very surprised at how much faster it will feel after simple maintanence.

Mods @ or around $100:
Exhaust
J-mod

Free mods:
Sensor lowering (no hp gains, just looks better)

Im sure there is more, I just cant think of any right this minute.

Cut the mufflers off, it's not really a performance mod but the car sure sounds a lot better. When that 4v hits 5000+ it screams!

Some more:

- Upgrade to 94-96 style intake tube, delete resonators, smooth and paint. (UNDER $100)

- Refurbish your headlights and fit a cheap HID kit. (LITTLE OVER $100)

Plenty more - check out the Mark VIII and Mark VIII performance forums - hours of good reading!

Oh yeah, and welcome! :)

i took off the resonator... where do i find the "silencer??? is there a cheap way to improve exhaust flow??? how much are the 94-96 intakes going for??? thanks for your help

the silencer is a pain. remove passenger fender liner, youll see the hideous black thing that dwells in the fender/bumper. Its self explanatory once you take off the pass wheel and fender liner and remove the air box. im pretty sure the bolts are 10mm, but they break loose but wont come off because you have to get into the fender and get a grips on em, or just muscle em off like did, just rip that ish out, theres no reason for it to be in there if your about performance. then you can add a cold air if you choose to go coilovers instead of the air ride. Real good mod... dont run an open cone filter in the engine bay it robs you of power. drill the air box and remove the air silencer. remove the one intake resonator by the firewall that runs on top of the engine and cap it with a quick cap 3/4 i think it is. check out the Tech Articles for more info.

check tire pressure. grease all bearings. synthetic oil. replace gear lube with synthetic. 1-2 accumulator.

He has a 93, so if it has stock exhaust, it will be a single tube from the third cat all the way back to past the rear suspension.

I think that detailing is one of the cheapest mods to improve a car. I hate rolling in a dirty ass car.

i cant believe you ppl are talking about cleaning the car... im asking for mods to improve performance... you dont drive looks. thanks for the silencer delete though ill be gettin that done within the week... if it doesnt make it faster or get better gas mileage just leave it out, thanks.

lose weight - it's free

and it makes every car you drive a little quicker.

Half the reason I bought this car was for looks. They're just trying to help you out, if you don’t want it then go somewhere else.

Lowering the car will actually make you a little faster because it drops you lower in the air stream and reduced drag on the car plus better handling. Not much better but it dose help.

Also haveing a clean car helps the air moving over it witch also helps with MPG, again not alot but still a good idea. I just feel better in a clean car.

what stuff can i remove to lose weight??

Besides yours (if possible).

The seats except passenger. The spare tire. The trunk carpet. The engine's beauty cover. The under-hood padding. 96+ you can chop the AIR pump out. Cat removal.

Air pump? is that the thing in front of the crank pully? whats the benefit of removal? just curious

Ya, the pump itself is right by the ABS unit. It pumps outside air into the exhaust system to lower emissions. Removal will only benefit in the weight reduction area.

You didn't say Iw ant to know every mod to strictly make my car faster lol...

Theres an old saying: How fast you want to go, and how much money do you want to spend?

There is no such thing as free horsepower.

Have you ever seen any gains from this? id rethink that idea. car craft did an article on this. taped seams dont even help.good idea though. lol.

True very true..

Taxi you have been given the free mods. Air Silence Removal, Resonator Removal, Cut off Mufflers, Reduce Weight. Gain are minimal. But for Free this is about all you will get.

You said cheap. They gave you Spark Plug wires, Exaust Mods take off resonator and replace with a piece of 2.5 exhuast pipe. These all are under $100.

You can take off the 3rd Cat and resonator and replace with a 2 in 2 out muffler then with a little more effort make it a true dual. May cost you up to $300.

You will get very little gain with all the mods listed maybe 20 hp at the most not noticeable. These mods help out with more expensive mods.

Start out slow and as money comes in add mods.

A good and inexpensive mods that you can add without braking the bank as you grow with your Mark VIII are gears, performance chips, even a Nitrous set up.

Cleaning the car will give you a bit more pride and your car will love you for the car. Take car of the the car.
