I ended up buying a Gen 2 overlay.. I need to get a new cluster so I can swap it's overlay and needles to my Gen 1 setup.. This one is 'a test mule' so I could test the sanding..

Sanding away the color is a super easy process that I accomplished with a scotchbrite pad.. I will update the thread when more information becomes available to me..

The pictures show some of the sanding and you can see that I have sanded the temp, tach, and MPH / km/h lettering.. Huge difference and I will try to get to it sometime throughout this year.. As most know, I have a lot of projects started and I kinda want to finish some of them..

Wow that doesn't seem hard at all...

So have you taken the cluster out before? How hard does it look to swap in LEDs. And do you think a spread of scotch tape will disperse the LED spread enough to make it look good?

I want to do this badly, so please keep us posted on the progress!

I really want to remove all the green like you have done, and put in super bright whites with some colored film on specific components.

I bought just the overlay from a member on here.. I wanted to make sure I could sand it off before I went and did it.. I'll buy a Gen 2 cluster off of eBay so I can have another overlay and the Gen 2 needles.. I will try to work with the cluster that I can't use and hook it up to a 12v source before I screw up my working Gen 1 one..

As for the LEDs, if you buy some diffused ones. That should work because there is no specific viewing angle.. AFAIK, the stock LEDs are white..

Maybe you can put in some color changing LED's, if they have some, or just 2 sets of LEDs next to each other, each a different color and you can turn on only one color or the other to change it up from time to time.

I'll have an extra cluster come in next week so I'll be right behing you on messing with that mod. Oh and thanks for that posting that picture of all the lights "on". It helps me see where everything is to get an idea of where to install the little v1 display.

You think it would look good mounted where the rpm letters are, right above the CEL. I wouldn't miss the rpm letters.

What about the cut square at the top middle. What is that for?

It looks to be the perfect size already.

I think there is something there, some symbol that lights up.

I'm glad someone else has decided to attempt this on the LS without me being the test mule. With that being said this is a fairly common (and easy) mod in the Cobra community and I have these done in mine. My current gauges are blue in my snake, I'll see if I can find the write up.

Traction control lights..

I took some pictures of my mag light behind it last night and the white looks fantastic.. I may even ponder the idea of keeping it white.. Looks very classy.. I will put those pics up later today

Like I said, the white is totally BA.. And you wouldn't even have to mess with the LEDs.. Just sand the color off and put it back on.. :)

Yeah thats it

What are you going to do with the cluster when you done? If your just going about the V1 mod, I'll buy it off of you when your done..

Well I dont know how much I'll use it, I might cut into it to or just use it to get an idea of how to go about it. I'll let you know when I'm done with it.

Cool.. I just want the needles and possibly try hooking it up to a 12v source and switching the LEDs in it.. So if the overlay is chopped up that's ok.. :)

UPDATE:
I have the rest of it sanded.. Looks damn good..

Yeah you can have the needles.

Pics or it didn't happen :p

I like where this is going. Good work so far

Do you think it would be possible to put some colored transparent film or something on the backside to create different colors on different parts?

Don't sand the windows at the bottom for the lcd displays, ie: gear position, speedo, info. I sanded mine off and it's annoyingly bright. I put a silver overlay in to match the exterior/ interior and put blue LED's in behind the face. The only problem is it's not as bright as original but at full dark it's good, and it looks bad-ass.

Pics? Info? What did you do with the LEDs? Are they standard issue bulbs?

I was thinking sand it and put tint film over it.. The message center crap I mean

Thanks..

I would say if you wanted say the temp gauge to be red or whatever, just change the LED. But I don't have a cluster so I'm just making assumptions
