How is the space underneath it like?
I'm planning on building a 3-way speaker system in my Mark Viii and I would like to place a pair of mid-range speakers somewhere around the places I've marked out on the picture below (sorry for the bad pictures, poor light and lots of loctite on the camera lens don't go hand in hand :shifty:)

How's the room underneath there?
Guessing the airduct is there, anything more?
Does anyone have pictures of the area underneath?

Thanks :)

There's no room back there for some speakers. The dash is is flemsy and wont support any speakers. Not to mention, there is a ledge where the dash is secured to the firewall.

Ofcourse I would build support and all for a speaker.
But that sucks. Thanks for the reply though :)
Back to the drawing board
Worst case scenario I'll have to build them into the A-pillars which I don'tm really want to :/

That upper dash piece just pops up very easily, but as Greg said there's not much room under there. We tried to hide a small gps module under there in my son's 93 and couldn't even get it to fit.

Can it be removed without taking out the whole dash? How? If so, I might just remove it, take a look and check if something could be built in any way there.
I would really like to have the mid-range speaker in the dash and the tweeters in the A-pillar.

Start on one edge or the other and just lift it up. On the passenger side you will have to unplug the light sensor after you raise it up a little.

Wow that's simple! I thought I would've needed to remove the whole dash and such.
That's great! Going to look into it when spring time comes :)

I'd glass the tweeter into the A pillar, Mid-range might fit where the factory tweeter went w/ a little cutting, and then the Mid-bass in the factory location.

Or i'd just get a really good 2-way set and put them in the oem locations. Less work with comparable sound.

I thought about that too but I want the sound coming from the front. I have the tweeters in the original position as it is now and the sound is way too much from the sides. Not enough from the front if you know what I mean.
And that's what I also want with the mid-range speaker. I want all of that sound coming from the front.
But might check into having the mid-range in the original tweeter position. I know there's lots of room behind it so that is not an issue at all.

Is your current tweeter set at 0db or +3 on the xover? I set mine to -3 and adjust it as needed on the hu. It sounds fantastic..Though it really depends on what type of tweeters your running too.

Mines set at 0.
I love the sound of them (it's a DLS Nordica 6.2 kit driven by DLS Ultimate A3) but it's the whole "stage" that feels wrong with the sound coming from the sides. The sound is better experienced coming right at you from the front rather than from the sides.
But I'm redoing my system when spring time comes because I want it better (can always get better ;) ).
Going to use two amps for the front system. DLS Ultimate A3 for woofers and DLS Ultimate TA2 (Tube amp om nom nom) for the tweeters and mid-range.
What do you have in your car?

When you said they were "too much" I assumed you meant the hashness. My bad.

Ah, okay. :D
What I meant was there's too much sound coming from the sides and too little from infront of you.

If you were going to attempt anything, I would take the dash completely out. But not need. After you lift up the upper cover and remove it, the dash part itself is very thin. It's only 1/8" of an inch thick. It fits over the ledge in my first pic, and rests under the windshield. There is no way I can see to put speakers in. I think that's overkill anyway. I would go with some tweeters in the a pillers, or some small speakers in the a pillar.

Ofcourse there would need some rebuilding but as long as there's a little bit of space I'd be happy to do it. Going to check it out later and see if there's room.
I don't just satisfy with "just" having tweeters in the A-pillars. With amps for several thousand dollars I'd like to have the rest of the system in the same or similar quality both in speaker wise and position.
But if the ledge is all there is under it, then I might have to go for another approach. Airduct or similar wouldn't be too much of a hassle to just cut and rebuild but if it's only the ledge that's visible under it then I'm in trouble :D
