When I start my '86 Mark VII in the morning it has suddenly stated to idle too fast (@1000 rpm). After driving it for a short time, shutting off and restarting seems to clear it up. What should I look for?
JoshMcMadMac said:1000rpm is not too fast for an idle when you start it for the first time. It will settle down if you give it a moment, or if you tap the pedal.

If you still question it try cleaning the carb a little, maby something is gummed up (I'm assuming that year had a carb?, if not clean the tb)
