When I start my '86 Mark VII in the morning it has suddenly stated to idle too fast (@1000 rpm). After driving it for a short time, shutting off and restarting seems to clear it up. What should I look for?

1000rpm is not too fast for an idle when you start it for the first time. It will settle down if you give it a moment, or if you tap the pedal.

If you still question it try cleaning the carb a little, maby something is gummed up (I'm assuming that year had a carb?, if not clean the tb)

The Mark VII's never had a carb, they are all fuel injected. Still sound advice.

Very Early Mark VII's were Carburated. I think it was 84-86 on some models but I know they were doing it in 84.

You're all sort of right.
From 1984 to 1986, our cars had CFI (Central Fuel Injected) engines. There were two electronic fuel injectors in what LOOKED like a carbeurator but was actually a throttle body. See the four centrally located wires in the picture below.

Suncoaster. If you really want to do some positive work, then see: http://www.lscclub.org/tech/1984EGR.htm and clean your EGR.
