how does a transmission cooler thermal bypass work?

i understand that it is in the line and that it somehow bypasses the cooler until a certain preset temperature.

but how does it circulate fluid when closed? do you just run a loop of line?

and how does it open up? are they spring loaded then opens when the spring heats up?

are there different types?

I wouldn't put it on my car. If I don't know how it works, it ain't going on there. Go with a different cooler. There are good ones out there without all the thermal bypassing.

I'd never heard of one until I read up on it.

Here's a pic of a valve:

And, here's some talk about one, with installation pics:

See how it works? Trans fluid comes in, flows through the valve and back out until it is up to operating temp, then a thermostat opens and lets fluid flow out of the valve, through a cooler, then back into the valve and back to the transmission.

For simplicity and less hassle, I'd rather get one of those nice transmission coolers that are self regulating. (they contain pipes of varying sizes so that when the transmission fluid is cold, it can only flow through the bigger pipes, due to being more viscous. As the fluid warms up, it becomes less viscous and so can then flow through more of the pipes etc.)
