Hey guys.. I just bought a 2001 Lincoln LS with the V8 and i love this ride... i have a problem though... when the car is in park, everything is fine... no shaking, no flashing lights, just a smooth idle... as soon as i put it in reverse or drive, the car shakes like a bitch... it drives fine... the owner said it just needs a tune up, but i wanted to see if anyone here has had that problem before i start dumping money into it... it has 68,000 miles on it... thanks guys

Is there a CEL?

yes my check engine light is on... but i havent had time to bring it to autozone yet... i havent had time with summer college classes and work but this weekend ill get it there

I hate to sound silly here - but -
- check engine light - means something is wrong. Continuing to drive the car in that condition could be very bad for it
- check engine light - will usually tell you what is wrong with the car - asking us to guess at it is silly - pull the code

no i havent been driving it... now its just parked in my garage until i can get the code scanned... i was just hoping someone here had a similar problem and could possibly let me know what kind of problems im looking at... thanks guys

cool..

if it is a mis-fire code - then you are likely dealing with the common issues of coils and/or leaking valve covers.

Being a 2001 is probably the valve cover gasket and coil issue. Thatll run you anywhere from 100 bucks to 500 depending on what you need to replace and where you get the parts.

Take off the cover over the coils on the passenger side and pull out the coil packs. There is a 7mm bolt holding each on in place which is a bit difficult to see, take taht out and the coil pack should slide right out no trouble. 50 : 1 says each coil pack is floating in a pool of oil. :p

you guys were right... had the code ran and it was a cylinder 5 misfire... do you guys recommend taking this to the dealer, or to my regular mechanic whos trustworthy?

Are you mechanically inclined at all? If so you can replace it yourself and just pay for the part, savin' some money on labor.

autozone has the coils for 50.00 now. 5 is a little bit of a pain, but overall an easy job. I would recommend doing the valve cover gaskets and plugs as well. About a 3 hour job if you take your time and do it right.

I looked at the tech article about replacing the valve cover gasket. It looks like kind of a pain in the ass. But, I do have another vehicle which will allow me to take my time. I was looking at the pictures, and when you pull the valve covers off, does any fluid leak out? Should I drain the oil before changing the valve cover gaskets. I'm pretty positive I need to, but I'm not 100% sure. Thanks for all the help guys, this site is sweet :) ...

no oil will drain out once the covers are pulled off. the job is easy just tight to get at.

make sure you have a 7mm gear wrench (lowes), a 10mm socket (both standard and deep, many extensions and knuckles.

So also need a touch of RTV and some dielectric grease (mentioned in the tech)

The passenger side is 3x easier than the driver side.
