Hello Everyone,

Just got the car on Aug 28th, 2000 LS with V8. CEL came on during drive home.

Changed the oil, the front wheel bearings and front brakes over a two week period. Started car and Check Traction Control message came up but went away after driving a short period.

Smell of hot oil and wisping smoke from exhaust manifold areas told me that I needed to change VCGs. I like this site. Stopped by Auto Zone and got codes checked. May need to replace 2 O2 sensors. Put in 5 gallons of regular on first trip home. Now, I know better! Filled up with preminum. No misfires so I did not want to drive car until I had replaced the VCGs.

Got the gasket kit and have been trying to find the time and patience to do the work. Car has been sitting for about 10 days. Today was the day. Wanted to pull the car to the garage door. Turned the key and no go!

Car cranks good and has a full tank of gas, gas gauge shows full when the key is in the on position. When I crank the car, the gas gauge goes to empty. Message system show Check Traction Control, but when I do a status check on message system, one of the messages is Engine sensor data error, so I am thinking that some sensor is keeping the engine from starting by shutting off the fuel pump, gauge shows full, but gauge goes to empty when cranking. Weather has changed, was in the high 80s and now in the mid 70s.

Any ideas as to which sensor failure might keep the car from starting.

Can you rent a code checker? How much does a OTC Genysis cost and any recommendations as to brand. I have four older cars and am finding that having a code checker on hand might be nice especially when car will not start.

As an aside, I was going through the thread on changing the VCGs. I noticed in one of the pictures, that there were small black rubber gaskets for the bolt holes. The kit I got has blue plastic grommets for the bolt holes. Is this going to be a problem?

Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto - will all read the code for free. With that code we can guide you to the issue.

It will not start, so I can not take it to Auto Zone. The copy of Owner's manual that I got online does not address nonstarting...

Hmmm. I do not see any dash warning for fuel pump cutout switch in the owners manual. Could engine sensor data error mean fuel cutout?

I guess I'll check the cutout switch and fuel pump fuse in the morning.

Quick question for anyone. When starting the 2000 LS, does the fuel gauge go to empty when cranking. I never noticed if it did, when the car was working.

Sorry - I missed that in your first post.

Are you getting fuel pressure at the fuel rail? There is a schrader valve on the driver's side rail - you can depress it to see if you have pressure (watch out you do not get fuel everywhere). You could attach a pressure guage there (should read about 30psi while idling, 40psi when no motor running)

There is a interia cut-off switch in the driver's footwell - it trips and cuts the fuel from reaching the engine. you simply push the red button in to reset it.

I am going to check it in the morning, the fuel cutout switch. On my mother-in-law's old escort, when the fuel cutout trips, an indicator comes on in the dash. I can not find any reference to a fuel cutout indicator on the LS instrument cluster.
