engine problem

my friend has a 94 mark 8 that was ticking on the driverside part of engine and now has no compression on that side. he pulled the valve cover off and all valves are working. he has compression on passenger side.

could this be becaue of a loose tensioner that made the timing chain skip a tooth or more?
 
also how many bolts are holding the break booster?
 
I am The owner of the car. We think that it jumped a tooth on the timing gear because there isn't any compression in any of the cylinders on the drivers side. We will be able to inspect it If we can get the brake booster off.
 
2 bolts holding the master cyl to the booster and 4 nuts inside the car also gotta disconnect the brake pedal from the shaft on the booster

oh,, NO compression in ALL drivers side cylinders...... not good. probably did jump on that side. :(
 
Can we get a reading on what it says? NO compression as in 0 psi on ALL cylinders, 80-100 psi on all cylinders? This is a very vague way to say it jumped timing. You should be getting SOME compression and if it's bad enough to give you 0 psi - i'd be worried about bent valves...
 
0 psi.. he did a test and it had some when it started to turn over and then nothing... like a blurp of pressure then nothing...
 
I'm not 100% sure, but the way I understand it, if the valve timing is off(even 1 tooth), there will be valve/piston damage. :shifty:

Yea, I don't know the exact number of teeth it has to jump to be bent, but this engine IS an interference (sp?) engine.

Like I said, start taking off the head...:(
 
he has the valvecover almost off the damn break booster is in the way. he also has the timing chain cover off. i dont know anything more but i or he will post if i or he sees anything wrong.
 
My next step is to get the head off. I need to get the break booster out but I can only find 3 nuts on the inside. Do I have to take out the pushrod? Is there a hidden bolt? I need to know everything obout getting the brake booster out.
 
Three or four studs hold it on. One or two are double nuts. That is one nut goes off, brackets comes off then another nut comes off. Then just disconnect the brake pedal. THe push rid stays on the booster. This is by far the hardest thing I had to put back on this vehicle!
 
No neet to take off the Brake booster. Just take off the brake lines coming out of the master cylinder, and the cover will come off. Might need a little persuation, but it will come off.

If you get the valve cover off, double check and make sure the rocker did get bumped off...sounds strange but it can happen and if it got wedge then it might have held the valve open....just a thought. Or get some real good quality pics of the head with the valve cover off maybe we here can see something.

possible, if only one cyl had 0 psi not a whole bank
 
Before taking the head off, maybe check the secondary chains. Its possible just he intake cam is off, but exhaust is still good - or however that all works - I know enough about timing and cams to be dangerous, but thats it.

I think you can take a mirro and turn the engine. On the back of the cams are "keys" or inserts for a tool that you use to time the engine, they should both always "point" the same direction if you get what I mean. But if one is straight up and down the the other is pointing to 1 o'clock, for example, then one cam is off - not both.
