Yesterday I took the Mark out for a drive and after a few minutes of in-town driving, I made it to the 2 lane highway and went to push down the throttle and the car just bogged down and died. It would start back up, but it idles like crap and when I try to rev the motor it just dies.

While idling, I heard a major hissing/vac leak sound, found that the tee that comes off the metal elbow of the throttle body and runs to the pcv and back to the gas tank. Replaced the tee and still having the same issues. Still hear the loud hissing coming from the drivers side of the throttle body area. Checked all of hose little plastic hoses coming off the sensors on the drivers side cam cover and they all check out good, brake booster line is fine. All of the vac. lines that I cna find around that area all check out fine.

I did find that there is what looks like some kind of vacuum diaphragm (I have no clue what it is) that has a little plastic vac. line coming off the top of it and a little rod coming off the bottom. the rod on the bottom was unhooked to whatever it hooks too. I have no clue what the part is and what it's purpose is.

I'm getting to my wit's end with this car and am not sure where to go to next. I am trying to locate more possible vac. lines around the TB, but have no luck finding anything. Anybody know of any or of what else I should check?
 
Erin: I take it you have a gen I. The diaphram you are talking about is part of the IMRC system. Intake Manifold Runner Control. The rod connects to the runner plate. There should be a little plastic bushing inside the end of the plate, where the rods connects too. These plates open up at around 3200 rpm, to allow more air to enter.
It is possible, that your diaphram is leaking. They use vacuum to close the IMRC butterflies. You can remove the vacuum line, and plug it. That should help with the vacuum noise.

If you have a 96, your in for a treat. The vacuum actuators (control) are obsolete. You'll have to search for one. They are few and far between.

As far as the bogging issue, you prolly have a bad throttle position sensor.
 
Sorry, I should have specified, it is in fact a 1st gen, it;s a '94.

So I'm going to try plugging that off to see if the vac. leak sound goes away. I also smell fumes coming from the same area that burn the hell out of my eyes. No clue there, maybe the EGR tube lines are leaking...

Would the TPS just "go" like that? And is there any way to check it?

So I pulled the vac line off of the IMRC and no change in anything. Still same running issues and still have the leaky vac line sound.....
 
Ok, sounds like your egr tube is cracked. IT does happen. Thats more than likely the hissing sound you hear. And yes, the tps can just go bad. Where are you located, maybe there is a LVC member who is local to you?
 
I'm in Erin Tn close to Clarksville and Nashville.

Would the egr tube cause any driveability issues or just leak exhaust fumes? It makes perfect sense, the tube being cracked.

I know on a 302 you can check the TPS with a voltmeter at .98 volts if its good, I'm just not sure on the 32v 4.6.
 
As usual, they develop a dead spot. No biggie, just replace it. The exhaust leak can definately cause some driveability issues. It will cause the o2 sensor on that side to richen the mixture a little bit. I know we have some people around that area.
 
I just wish I knew a way to test it, I mean, I'm sure you know more than me when it comes to these cars, I just don't want to throw parts at this car and it not fix the issue.
However, the TPS isn't really all that expensive, about 36 bucks here.

I have another oddity to add to this; just for kicks with the car idling I unplugged the MAF connector and saw no change in the way the motor ran.
 
Give us some codes. You can get the code flasher from AZ or Advanced. It might tell you a lot more and eliminate some of the guess work. It does sound like something to do with the EGR though.
 
Check engine light isn't on, a least not while idling. Not 100% on this, but if it's not on (it's never come on since I've had the car) then I won't get any codes....

Might be time to lift the message buttons up and make sure the bulbs are all good or even installed. If it ain't in there or it's blown, it can't come on. Something like you're describing would almost surely make the CEL come on.
 
The CEL comes on upon start-up, then goes off after a few seconds. That's one of the first thing I checked. Believe me, I wish the CEL was on so I could diagnose this issue a little easier...

Ok, maybe it's just one of those things that almost wants to make the CEL come on but doesn't. I would disconnect the battery, clear all codes and get one of those things and then read the flashes to see what it says. I hate them but at the same time, it can help you to not throw parts at a car that don't need them. The CEL doesn't have to come on to get some code flashes.
 
I bet if I could actually drive the car around a few miles the CEL might come on. But, something is keeping me from doing that, am I'm trying to find out what.

I am going to buy a scanner that I don't have to count the flashes.... O'reilly auto parts sells them here for 30 bucks, specifically for Ford OBD-1, they also read stored memory codes which could for sure help - they are quite awesome.

You can get a can of throttle body cleaner and chase the leak down - the engine will pick up when the vapor gets close to the leak or it might lower in rpm if it's already rich - but you will notice that the engine is picking up the vapor from the t/b cleaner - we used to find intake manifold or carb gasket leaks years ago with carb cleaner - nice if you have a can with a dick on it so you can get it in close - car might of spit and blew a t/b gasket - never can tell!

dude i am in Nashville. well Franklin just moved out here from Murfreesboro today.

i am not working right now and am bored to tears. if you need another set of eyes i will swing out there tomorrow.

Thanks for the offer, I don't really have a lot of time during the week, I work 10 hour days 5 days a week so it's dark when I leave and dark when I get home... It would be awesome to have another set of eyes on this thing but I prob. Won't get another chance to do much until this weekend, unfortunately.


It looks like I will have to pull the TB to change the TPS? Or, is there a way around that?

i think you can get to it. it is just tight
opening day for beech bend is sat. you may want to run up there, if you have time. i am going to try to (money is tight)

Did you check the output of the TPS first? Real easy to do.

It looks REAL tight. No way a screwdriver is getting back there, I don't think.

I would love to go to beach bend, but like you said, money seems tight all around.
