anyone have a infrared temp gun that could measure the engine bay ambient temp after driving for me. i am going to get one some day but not right at the moment. Thank you anyone who could do this for me.

:)

An IR temperature gun can measure the temperatures of various surfaces under the hood, but not the ambient air temperature under the hood.
Time is also a factor here. Do you want the temperature while the engine is idling, or the max temperature after it has been off for several minutes?

I just popped the hood and stuck my hand in the engine bay and the temperature reading I got was "F'ING HOT". Hope that helps?

In all seriousness, you need to measure the ambient air with a probe-type thermometer, not an infrared one. And you probably need to let it sit in whatever condition you are trying to read for 10-minutes or so in order to get a decent number.

Thanks guys,

I figured though with an Infrared I could measure multiple areas and average the temp out. May be rather inaccurate. Could I get a probe temp at like harbor freight? I just need to make sure the ambient air temp is below 105*c

a cooking prob will work... I have a digital one with a good 6ft cord... go to any grill store, they should have what your looking for

While the engine is running, that should be true. However, I would be surprised if it didn't go above that a few minutes after shutdown.

I did a ghetto experiment a long time ago on the LS under hood temps, it gives a rough idea of how hot it is in there, but there is definitely better ways of doing it.

Yep, that would work well. I have a cordless one for my smoker, so I can keep an eye on the temp while sitting inside and drinking lol. Can't remember how much it was off hand. 40 bucks maybe?

Haven't competed yet. There is a local competition called Grills Gone Wild that's coming up soon. It's a rib comp, so I figure I could do okay with that. I've only been trying my hand at the smoker for a little over a year. One of my favorites recently was some pork boneless country style ribs. I thought they may get too dry on the smoker, so I wrapped them in bacon:

A little while ago I brined, then smoked a turkey for some friends visiting from out of town. It was amazing. Southern style thanksgiving. Homemade mac n cheese, and cornbread stuffing from scratch. No pics of that, sadly.

good stuff, I will report back later with what I needed the temp for: mmm fun little projects

Here's another quick one, though I grilled on the smoker. Girlfriend's bday dinner. Filet Mignon, med. rare, with steamed asparagus and garlic and herb mashed potatoes. Had a bottle of 98 Kendall Jackson Reserve merlot with it.
