hey im going to replace my fuel pump, and to do so you have to drop your exhaust. The problem is i've never done this, whats involved? is it hard? i dont have my rear mufflers or resonator - i got glasspacks. so ill save some weight. whats the best way to go about doing this so i can drop the fuel tank down a bit to get at the fuel pump?

Its easy. Take the rubber hangers off and let is sag down a little. That will give you enough room to change the pump.

i read that doing the walboro on gen 1 takes like 3 hours? anyone agree with that? if its that easy, unhang the exhaust, slightly drop down the fuel tank - i dont see that it will take 3 hours... its just kind of chilly outside and i dont want to get into a job where its going to get dark on me!

Go out there and just do it...

The only difficulty is rust, depending on how much or little you have to deal with.

so i dont have to take it completely off? that should make things a lot easier, it was the only part i had issues about.

so the fuel pump can be replaced by not completely dropping the exhaust or completly dropping the fuel tank?

It's been a few years since I've done this, so it's by memory-

You have to drop the exhaust enough to be able to drop down the fuel tank.
So you don't need to completely remove it from the vehicle, just unbolt it from the 3rd cat, unhook a couple of the hangers, and let it hang out of the way.

Quick suggestion- the less gas you have in that tank before doing this repair, the better. It'll make life much easier if you have a near empty tank when doing this repair. And make sure you have a jack under the tank to lower it a little bit and raise it back up.

Additional point for discussion - I remember on member here spoke about cutting an access panel into his floorboard for future repairs. I wonder if that worked out well. After going through the Lincoln repair, I was shocked and delighted to replace the fuel pump in my Toyota, it involved removing the seat cushion, removing a little panel, and then just removing the pump... so easy.

I don't think it would take 3 hours...

Depending upon how much gas is left in the tank, is my opinion. Too much gas and the weight of the tank may be too much to let hang.

But to drop the exhaust and the tank is so easy.. About 4 bolts on the exhaust and 4 on the tank with a few hose clamps.

I did mine in 15 degree temps on the ground.
