my differential seems to make a grinding noise when i let off the gas, i can see that there is differential fluid all over the pumpkin, is it easy to change the fluid and what kind should i use? i do have access to a lift.

Probably have a leaking pinion seal, which is kind of a bummer to replace.

It may be too late for some fluid now, if its already grinding. Good luck get somthing thick.

Time to replace some parts...

If you are on a budget I'd find a used unit... they are not rare by any means. Or this would be an ideal time to swap up to 4.10's or 4.30's :D

+1

perfect time to release the "beast from within".
it wont kill your MPG and your SPM {smiles per mile) will drasticly increase

My Pumpkin use to have some fluid leakage on the outside, after a quick lube filled it up all the way.
This was before I owned it, fluid is at correct level now and sofar all is normal.

i would like to go for 4.10's but i still have the 3.27's or whatever from my 95 lsc, how much work would it be to take the differential out of my 95 put 4.10's in it and put it in my 98? or would it be less work to do the one wheel method and fix the 98's up with some gears.

and kk they probably dont have used 4.10's just laying arround right? by any meens some 3.08's but probably not 4.10's. i would not know where to find them if they even did exist. used would be nice but if i am working on my differential anyways why not do gears!

is the fill for the differential above the drain with the 5 inch long hose to nowhere on it?

4.10's from a ford ranger? meaning you would have to swap the gears into the mark's differential right?

and is the differential fill the hose port to nowhere above the drain?

i opened up the drain the fluid and about 100 drips of muddy fluid came out, i am taking it as there should have been more in there as it takes a qt and 1/2 of fluid. so i pumped some fluid through and got a few more drops put the plug back in and tried taking a rubber hose from the fluid bottle to the hose port on the diff. and it keeps building up pressure after a 1/5 the bottle because its sealed, whats a easier way to do this?

I'm saying that the Ford Ranger is the only vehicle I know of that came from Ford with a 4.10 8.8 ring a pinion in it...

the "5" hose to nowhere" is the vent, and im guessin your using the fill plug as the drain......since there is no drain. you have to remove the rear cover to drain it and you remove the fill plug and fill till fluid comes out of the fill hole

Do what chicken said.

BTW, if your car is reasonably level, and fluid is still able to come out of the fill hole, then you aren't low on fluid.

Oh, and when you are are ready to service the diff, clean up and blow out the breather - make sure it isn't blocked!

Thinkin' I'll be tackling the same project shortly. How well machined is the diff cover? Would one require any kind of sealant/gasket to close it back up? What are the snags people usually hit when their servicing the diffs on Marks?

If you are going any further with repairing the diff, make sure you have pattern paint, dial indicator, new ring gear bolts, and maybe new axle seals if you are pulling the pumpkin anyways. But that's probably common knowledge right?

I swapped out to an LSD in my LS, and bought the new ring gear bolts and axle seals for about 30 bucks I believe. It wasn't much. I've heard it's a good idea to use new ring gear bolts for sure though, as those get a lot of stress.

I didn't want to risk messing my ring and pinion and everything up so I had the local HIPO shop do it all for me :D
