Hi, so I have a problem and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with it.

I have a dealer installed remote start in my '05, and in the past few weeks it's started malfunctioning sometimes.

What happens is on the first start of the day it is ok. But if I drive it, park it and try to restart with the remote, it only turns the started for a short time then stops. Then it tries it again, but really short, and the car usually turns over and starts here, but almost immediately shuts off again. When it does this there is no chance of the remote starting it again.

Any ideas?

Yep, remote starters suck. From what I gathered, they only cause electrical gremlins and grief in general. Sorry I can't help with the actual problem.

well it all depends on what they used for a bypass module, what does the PATS light do when it fails to start? blink a lot? or come on and stay on for about 5-10 seconds?

and what do you mean by a "short time" like a couple of minutes, or a couple of seconds?

also, some of the worse RS installs i have ever seen have come from dealerships, as these are very new to the service techs and a lot of the cars come from the factory (which by the way is a completely different animal then a dealer or aftermarket system) they dont have a tremendous amount of experience with them. and most dealer installs usually begin with just sticking a wire into a fuse box to supply power for whatever...

Old thread.

I recently dicovered a plug that was undone near my intake manifold this weekend while I was replacing the cooling system parts. Anyways, it was identified as part of the remote start. (previous owner got it done). I had just unplugged the fuse under the dash for the longest time.

So for kicks I tested it out and now it works, but the range is pretty terrible.

The system looks like an Avital 4100, so it is probably crappy already. The FOB looks pretty outdated. It looks like this:

So where do you guys have your antennas mounted for best reception? I have tried near sunroof and near mirror, but get mixed results. I do have tint on all of my windows, including windshield. However, above the mirror there is no tint, but the factory windshield tint/strip is present.
So I wasn't sure where to get best results.

the antenna usually go at the top of the windshield pointing down just like LSEMEX's

I would pull up the manual on that system, vipers newest models of the same series are almost exactly the same (like the 4105/4115), depending on when it was built, at some point they started adding a "ESP2" data port or a "bitwritter" port. its either a three pin black connector or a four pin red connector. if it does support ESP2, then you could always add a Viper Smart Module (like the VSM200) and control the car from anywhere in the world (that has cell data service). talk about serious range.

those are also their weakest remotes as far as range, first check with brand new batteries (when replacing the batteries, check the connection on the battery terminal where it contacts the board, they are notorious for cracking and needing a little solder), and then you could alway buy a new/different remote and antenna set with better freq and range (you would have to do a little looking in to it, not every antenna and remote set are interchangeable).

also is it set to start the car from one push, two pushes, or pressing two buttons at the same time? programming it for one press activation usually get a good bit of range more.

Thanks, I will relocate the antenna to above mirror.

I have looked online and from what I gather, it looks like there is no upgrade fob for this one.

Right now it is double click to start.
