does anybody know if the keyway is cast into the crank... It didnt come off when i pulled my stock dampner. And does anybody have any ideas on how to re-install the new underdrive dampner. I tried just using the bolt but it's too short. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can not swear to this... but... The key should stay.

That is the way it is on the 4.6L SOHC Romeo sitting on my engine stand right now anyhow. The same key used for the dampener is used for the sprockets which drive the chains for the cams. This also keys into the crank position sensor gear. I'm pretty damned sure it's the same on all Mod engines.

as far as the new under-drive dampener... ehhhh....

You have to line up the key-way with the key, AND avoid damaging the seal. If you failed to line up the key-way and attempted to press the dampener on with the bolt, you may have damaged (read: deformed) the key. Although a total PITA, it is fixable; you just have to removed your front cover, tensioners, timing chains, CPS gear and both timing chain sprockets... without thumping a valve into a piston, and then put it all back together again with proper cam timing... I hope you didn't damage the key!

Liberal amounts of oil on the shaft of the dampener might help, and inspect the seal to make sure it hasn't been damaged (there by getting in the way... or leaking later on for that matter. Might even want to think about throwing a new one in just for good measure!)

I had to pull the old dampner to the point where the new one goes on. I havent damaged the key but i think im going to get a longer bolt in order to get it pressed on enough to put the original dampner bolt on. Also, I decided to replace the seal just as a precaution.

good call; long as it's lubed up really well, aligned and it goes on straight, you shouldn't have any problems!

There is a special tool for installing the damper. Autozone probably has one that they will let you borrow. You have to actually buy it, but when you return it, they give your money back.

I got it on today with no problems besides a little scuff on the new pulley. Thanks for your help and suggestions everyone.

As I recall, the special tool isn't much more than a bolt with over-sized washer... Those removal/install kits really are most handy for removal!
