I am looking to have a custom 2 1/2 inch system done with an X pipe from Supercoupe Performance in place of the 3rd cat, and I am wondering how Flowmaster Original 40 mufflers would sound with this setup. I think the x-pipe would give me some better low end torque and should help bring out a better sound in the Flowmasters. I want the setup to be moderately loud as well.

I know headers would help but I dont have $$ for Kooks right now

Thoughts?

For sound ideas, check out the exhaust sound clips for the Mark VIII on youtube. Some have descriptions of their set up.

There is a lot of debate about the X-pipe vs H-pipe... However, one thing that is virtually universally known is the sound difference. With the X-pipe, the exhaust pulses are forced to blend... with the H-pipe, they stay separate. Obviously the X-pipe does a better job equalizing the pressure than the H. Generally, IF the H-pipe performs better than the X, it would be in your low end; offering at best, a bit more TQ down low. But a lot of times the low end numbers are equal... and when you start hitting the high RPM's, it's almost a given that the X-pipe will out perform the H-pipe. BUT... as I said, all of that is debatable.

For sound... the H-pipe will give a more low-throaty sound; more like an old muscle car. The X-pipe is usually a touch more tinny... or raspy. As far as I'm concerned, both sound nice but I do prefer the throaty-ness of the H. I went with an H-pipe on my F-150 when I had my custom true duals made... but, this truck is used for off roading and towing my boat mostly; I could careless if I lose 3-4HP on the top end; that's not where the truck runs usually anyway. I wanted the sound... and the small chance I'd have better low end numbers on the H-pipe.

Flow 40's?!?!?! You really like it loud huh? I have a friend running a set-up pretty much exactly like you're describing on his 95 Mustang GT; no cats, X-pipe and original flow 40's. The resonance inside the car on the highway with the top up is quite unbearable. To the point that he wears earplugs. Of course, his mufflers are just about directly under the rear sear floor pan and yours would be at the rear. So that will help a touch. But, if you must go with flow 40's... do yourself a favor and get the 40 Delta Flow; exterior volume is very very close to original 40 series, but they worked pretty hard to decrease the resonance in the vehicle. My truck has 50D's on it, and it sounds great... Depending how loud you want it, I'd say go with the 50's; I can tell you this much... you won't need to wear earplugs on the highway!

Oh yeah... or you could just order his full system; kill the guess work and make things easier. When (if) I get my mark, I'll be snaging that system I believe.

geno... you offer your kit with a single X-pipe (I'd rather just one)? Is it all stainless, mandrel bent?

I can sell you as many x pipes as you want. There galvinized mandrel 2.5 inch steel with a 10 year warranty. The mufflers are ALL SS and lifetime in and out, even against blowout.

okay sweet... I'll keep you in mind; my intent will be fully stainless (I'll just look elsewhere for the X.. just my odd-ball preference for stainless)... Those muffs though... look and sound really pretty!!! Hopefully I'll have a reason to make an order in the spring/early summer!

I had 40 delta flows on my 96 T-Bird (4.6) that came with the catback. I had all cats and a deleted resonator and the car was not too loud, but it still droned but im used to that. That is why I want to try out the original 40's because I want it kind of loud and I love the flowmaster sound. I think no 3rd cat and upping the piping to 2.5 inch with an x pipe and flows would be decently loud. If only I had the $$$ right now..guess it will be a summer project..

How much do the LMS x-pipes cost a piece Gene? BTW the LMS catback sounds insane, but I am so partial to flowmaster for some reason lol

I agree... the flow sound is unbeatable... even if the actual flow abilities are beatable.

I'm pretty sure the sound difference between the original 40's and the 40 delta's would be almost indistinguishable.

However, it appears that is all pointless anyway. Just checked Flowmaster's website... no original 40's All the 44, 40 and 50 series use the Delta flow design now. But it would appear the super 44 would be what you want given your postings.

Flows are going to be loud .... A lot of people have posted in the past that they wish they would have gone with another brand... I've heard Geno's and they sound very good. My personal favorite sound comes from Magnaflows.. A more tamed down version of the Flowmasters..

I always thought the Flowmasters made the Mark VIII sound too much like a Mustang. But if thats what you are looking for... go for it.

Why two X pipes and not one?

I got 7lb/ft & 4hp across theentire powerband w/2 x pipes. and that was tested ona dyno. running 1 x being a magnaflow dual in/out w/ built n x pipe) then installing the 2nd x and running it.
glad geno talked me into it
made a good exotic sound

not looking to create debate here... but did you dyno it with only one X pipe installed?

I'd just be interested in seeing dyno sheets for 1 X-pipe and 2 X-pipes, with nothing else changed.

yes sir sure did test it w/1x
dyno sheets are packed away due to moving into our new house but I did keep them for just this reason

If you don't mind, when you get done with the move, could you throw them up? Not calling you out; just would be interested to see... I've read things both ways, and while I personally am happy with one X-pipe, I do like to see some printed facts/research on things so I'm better informed.

yeah man no problem I'll post them when the move is over. thiswhy I kept them I was sceptical about the dbl x but I took geno's word & when we had it tuned perfectly w/ 1 x we pulled it off the dyno took 20minutes and installed the 2nd x before the dual in/out magnaflow. Then we strapped down the mark and did 3 more pulls
