I have a guy here that told me he will do a custom 2.5 exhaust for $550 installed. He said I don't need an H pipe or X pipe because the exhaust is custom he said either way the performance will be about equal. does this sound right to you more engine smart guys?? He said that it will give a real deep exhaust tone. If I go this route will my performance suffer??

Im not extremely knowlegeable about this but... Ive always been told that you need an H or X to equalize the banks of the engine, but that may be just a myth. Im sure someone will chime in with more knowlege about it

As far as I know.... X marks the spot

For any performance exhaust system, some type of crossover connecting the two sides of a dual exhaust system is important because it acts to balance the two banks of the engine.

The common H-style crossover is good at balancing sound pulses between the two halves, but does little to promote the cylinders to vent exhaust gases more efficiently because the exhaust gases tend to follow the path of least resistance, which is straight through each pipe rather than taking the 90-degree turn through the H-pipe into the other half of the system.

In an X-pipe system, however, where the two sides of the system intersect, the gasses have no choice but to intermingle as they pass through the junction. This promotes improved exhaust venting by smoothing out uneven exhaust pulses from the engine’s firing order. It also helps quiet down the exhaust, resulting in a mellower, less raspy tone.

I was thinking I should have one or the other to help equalize the pressure I will talk to the guy and tell him I want one or the other, I kinda want to mess around with it and maybe put a set of electric cutouts on just to play around once in awhile but I am kinda afraid to, The last I heard from the only guy I know of having them now has a blown engine on his LS....

Go w/ the X-pipe. Magnaflow and Bassani performance exhausts come w/ the x-pipe rather than the h-pipe. IIRC

right - I did the same thing - local muffler shop made it for me:

Parts = $451.63
2 x 42443 (flowmaster super 40 muffler) $80.99 each
1 x MAG X-PIPE (magnaflow x-pipe) $89.95
2 x MAG TIPS (magnaflow dual double-rolled tips) $49.95 each
2 x CON PIPES (2.5" piping) $29.95 each
2 x EX-PIPES (2.5" piping) $14.95 each

labour $150.

If its $550, you might as well spend $50 more and get a stainless Magnaflow system that has an xpipe and all. I went the custom route and I would have rather had the Magnaflow.
