cruising downhill in nuetral and then going back in to drive

if im going down a big hill, sometimes i'll throw it in nuetral and coast to get better gas mileage. but when i put it back in to drive, it will rev to 2200-2500 rpm, drop down a bit, then find overdrive. can this hurt my tranny?

I've done this along the Mississippi valley more than a few times. But I turn off OD first. I dont think it will hurt anything. What its doing is jumping into second, then third, then OD.

We have no hills around here in central Arizona that we can coast down. Flat and straight. To save gas, I stay at home and soak up AC!!! Back in Mass. years ago I would love to BLAST down hills on the turnpike, now people are coasting... that sucks Thanks George for all that cheap oil to pay for the war. O no... there I go again?

When you 'coast' with the tranny in neutral, the transmission pump is reving at idle speed while the internals are being driven at the coast speed. Not exactly a good idea. The same idea applies in a more extreme case when you tow the vehicle with the rear on the ground. The transmission is not getting lubricant the way it is supposed to.

Depending upon the condition of your transmission, prolonged use like this could lead to premature failure.

This is also not considering the clutch plate slippage that occurs when the transmission is suddenly engaged at speed. Not necessarily fatal, but certainly not good for longevity.

You could coast downhill in a lower gear. It'll keep you from having to ride the brake to maintain the legal speed.

Good info. I will remeber this next time i'm going down a hill. I will just leave it in gear. I wondered about this too & wasn't sure.

I will turn the O/D off when going down a hill to avoid speeding up to fast & saving the brakes, like JMiles_T had mentioned.

thanks. i didnt know that. i appreciate a "real" answer, not get a prius. i figured i wasnt the only one to ever do this and am glad to know the drawbacks.

The reasoning for saving gas is to save money (I don't think he is taking the envrionmental stance). He wouldn't be saving any money by purchasing a new car -even if it was a Prius. Would take many years to make up the cost of a new car purely in fuel savings alone, so buying a Prius wouldn't save any money anyway. Neither would coasting downhill when factoring in the cost of replacing the transmission early.

Actually one of the reasons I keep the Mark is because of the excellent milage. 28MPG highway average and 18 in the city is not bad at all!

I think all those CNN reports on the Hyper-MPG people out there have people wondering how can I get more MPGs ... In one report a guy on hills and at other point of his ride turns off his car then restarts it. I don't see how that is really a good idea. I think they are a bunch of paranoid OCD case who now have something else to be compulsive over.

For the big V-8 Barge fine more that get the gas mileage that a stock Mark VIII gets without 2 or 4 cylinders shutting off while on the hwy.

You do! New O2s and a clean MAF can go a long way towards economy. Wires, coil packs and plugs help a lot too!

Look at your owners manual typically you would put it in nuetral to have it towed to a shop, and the recomended distance is 50 miles. Now you see people towing thier cars behind rvs all the time, but have you driven one of these cars? I have and I can tell you they dont very well.
