I was gonna give you guys an intro to the madness, but screw it, you just get to dive right in...

I want to put a fuel injected 331 ford (5.0L 302 worked over) into my 2000 V8 lincoln LS, a tremec T5 behind it, and a new rear end.

I dont care about the interior, i dont care about the features and accomidations they can go. the whole stock drivetrain would be taken out and sold.

are there any MAJOR problems with this idea? i know its out of the ordinary, crossmembers can be made, motor mounts can be welded, driveshafts can be made. But is there anything that stands out to someone as to why this wouldnt work?

Manual conversion parts can be found. Mustang computers can be found, wireing harness can be bought.

im sure this is one of those "if you have to ask, you probably shouldnt be doing it" but bear with me guys, dont ruin my dream just yet.
 
I'd say the biggest reason it hasn't been done yet is $$$$. Although, it sounds like a question for one of the more knowledgeable members of the site. I do remember a post a long time ago about a guy who gutted the whole thing, and used only the body. Sounds similar to what you are talking about, but I have no idea where that thread is around here.
 
It's really no more money than doing a motor, trans and rear swap into any other car. If my car was paid off, I'd do the same thing with it that I did with my 87 LSC - make it into a tempermental monster.

thats about what hes gonna have to do ls shell and mustang (or whatever) power/drivetrain and electronics, custom gauges etc. rumor is that ford tried a 4.6 and couldnt get all the modules to communicate with each other and still keep it a Lincoln
 
I've been wanting to put a Mustang engine in my car, but I just can't do away with all the features that require the computer.
 
Doable? Yes.

Cheap? No.

Easy? Not for most people.

Worth it? Depends on the person.

Dumb question... Why a push-rod V8? I could be wrong, but the over-all height of the 5.0L would be a bit of an issue with the LS; it's got that tall intake on it. This is purely speculation; I've never measured to find the difference.

Just snag yourself a 99-up mustang GT doner car. But keep the IRS; just swap to a 8.8 center section and have some half-shafts custom made. Build the engine up and you'd be set. Or keep an eye out on e-bay for a Teksid 4.6L block (all aluminum, strongest alum. version made so says SHM)... have it re-sleeved, throw in a big bore stroker kit, you'll be sittin at 5.2L, making great numbers and spending less on fuel than the windsor push-rod option.
 
If you REALLY get serious about doing it, shoot ILLS a few PM's. He has done alot of custom stuff SUCCESSFULLY and Im sure he can shoot you in the right direction.
 
i started a thread like this a while back...i was wanting to use a 4.6 with a t-56...i'd really like to do a swap for my car...but i dont have the cash...
 
Guys - there has been alot of threads on this.

The largest issue is matching the various systems in the LS that interconnect together using a bus. If you go with a standalone engine management system then you run into an issue with things like gauges, srs, ...etc.

Trying to match the 5.0L to the LS PCM my be the easiest way to go - but you'll have issues going to a non-cop engine.

Not just the fabracation, which would be like another engine swap - but to get a street legal car out of it would be a lot of time getting the electronics matched up.

Putting in a new 4.6L from a new Mustang - easier.
 
i like pushrod engines, i dont know why, but i do. i dont really want to do the 4.6L, seems like more of a headache.

what if i do carburated? cars with carbs can still make power and have good throttle response. how many problems would that eliminate? I know someone said he doesnt want to loose all of his computer gadgets, me i dont care. fuel mileage and DTE are things somebody with this mindset doesnt care about. traction control i would love to see gone anyways. the stereo is another story, its nice, but it can also be replaced if i even wanted one.

The biggest problem i see in my eyes is getting the speedo, tach, temp gauge, gas gauge to work and turn the other idiot lights off that would go crazy. i know on camaros/trans ams with OBD1 you can hook em up and change somethings in the computer to make it think something is there that isnt. from what ive read that technology isnt available to us LS owners yet.

Also, ive never been inside a V6 5speed LS, looked at the engine bay upclose or firewall upclose. im assuming that my v8 would have the same firewall with markings on where to hang a clutch pedal, what someone brought up to me was "whats on the other side"? has anyone of you looked into detail about this? is there something in the way of where the slave cylinder would go on a V6?
 
nope - not that simple.

the question is - can you get the LS PCM to live without controlling everything....

The current gauges are all part of the same cluster and plug into the data bus as a single unit. If you choose to dump the guage cluster and go with seperate individual gauges - you'll need to worry about the PATs, SRS and odometer.

The PCM sends data onto the bus and each of the connected system look at the data to see if it was meant for them, if so it then processes it. For example - when you push the turn signal down for a left turn - you send a signal to the FEM, that in turns sends data to the PCM, which in turn sends data to the REM and together they turn on the right lights.... it's not like the old days where the turn stock enabled a relay on the lights directly....

If you will gut all the electronics - our figure your way through them.
 
right - but that is not compatible with the REM, FEM, ....etc

The LS is the only Ford (that I know of) the has the REM also control the fuel pump - veruses using a sperate FPDM.

It's not impossible - just a lot of work,
 
If your gonna go to all that trouble, shell and tub the car, cage it, put in a solid axel and drop in a big block. It wouldn't be a comfy Lincoln anymore but it would be fast and look cool.

Making it all street legal and emissions friendly just wouldn't be cost effective or really worth your time and money. Just my opinion though.
 
Its almost to the point where a Gen1 can be had for almost nothing with lots of miles or with the slightest damage. I can see someone doing it now.
 
And you would have to figure out the SRS piece. (As far as I know) - you have to maintain safety features (airbags, pre-tensioners, ...etc) that were in the car when it received it's DOT.

For example - the 'pimp my ride' guys recieved some steep fines over replacing the steering wheel airbag with a video monitor.

Only if you don't have enough money to do it right. Be prepared to open the wallet if you want it streetable.

You'd be better off doing all that to a MkVIII.
 
we dont have emissions here either.

Thats a bummer about the gauges and ignition and what not. seems like thats a pretty big thing to get around. obviously cutting the whole car of wires and electrical equitment is one option. but that would make the project alot more difficult when you get into the whole dash harness/interior wireing.
 
it's not a wiring issue - it's a replacment of most of the major computer systems on-board.
