Covers

I run without valve covers, no problems at all. Just have to change oil more frequently..

Are you sure you aren't just adding it, not changing it. It should be self draining.

I just pulled the heads all together!!! saved a lot of weight

I just pulled the whole engine, saves even more weight :shifty:

You're probably getting valve covers and coil covers mixed up. Some probably run without coil covers, I did for a month or so back a like two years ago. Hite runs without covers, but he has accel coils that seal up pretty good that running without the cover is ok.

I dont know of anybody who runs without valve covers. Why would you want to?

Arent they there to prevent water from getting in and ruining the coils?

im not sure what other use they have, besides keeping water out, which you want to do. Unless you like buying coils....at $50 a piece i suggest you leave them in.

Why do you want to take em out anyways? worried about the heat buildup or just being lazy after doing plugs?

Quicker access for when the next set of coils have to go in ?

You shouldn't have moisture (other than humidity and possibly condensation) reaching the top of your valve covers unless you're doing something wrong.

Nice M4rk... Very nice

To the OP... I started dropping coils 20k ago. So I replaced all of the coils, and never put the coil covers back on. As long as the rubber seal at the rear underside of your hood, is sealing tight against the cowl, you will have no issues with water. If that seal fails, it won't matter if if the coil covers are on or off. With the covers on, the water hits the wiring harness, for the coils, and migrates in under the cover. IMHO, all the covers are for is cosmetics, and they trap heat the coils generate, which shortens the life of the coils. I have the engine cover off too. Hope this helps.

Here we go again I got my popcorn I'm ready!

Like Alax said I don't use coil covers. If I was using factory COPs I would use the covers but the Accel COP boots seal the plug well tight so no water can get in.

Which reminds me, Hite, are you selling and shipping to Canada a set of the Accel hold downs ?
( I have a feeling I'll be trying those next when the DG529's start to act up )

Yes I am. Let me know when you are ready

Cool, one can always rely on the Hite Performance.

I'm just heading out of town for 1 1/2 weeks or so. (give you guys a break from me for a bit)

no rush .... ;)

I took my Coil Covers off, in hopes of reducing the amount of heat they hold. Trying to keep the trapped heat out makes me think they might last a couple more days than they would've with them on. They just look cosmetic to me, I think the other seals do a good job of keeping moisture out. I believe that the only way the coils will go bad from moisture due to this... Is if I drive the car off a boat ramp. :Beer
But then I'd have bigger problems than just coils.

In my opinion the coils are less likely to go bad due to the covers being removed than because of trapped heat.

Anyone agree?

When coils do go bad, it seems to be after a very long time. I replaced my coils around 65K, and im close to 80K with no misfires. I got one of the last sets of visteons.

Stock piling ... I'm not messing around, takes too long to get parts from the US to Canada.
I'm setting myself up with 'Extras' so when these new DG529 coils start acting up,
these Accel's & Hite Performance Hold-downs, are going in and no covers back on.

on a separate note, no start on the LS this morning, that 2001 battery has served it time,
was bad all summer long, no green eye ... Stealer part, called, $157CDN, ready this afternoon.
Boosted the LS of a power pack, like I need this just before putting it into storage. however,
now, no need to worry about weak battery when I do go to move it during the winter for
upgrades, paint and other smallish repairs/corrections.

As I said above somewhere ^^^

There is a reason, (besides VC gaskets), that Ford warranties these for 100k. In another thread, website etc. , it is said that the reason Ford started the warranty, was due to delamination of the epoxy, and outer shell. What causes this. Heat.

I do think that heat is a factor in coil life. However, I'm not so sure that the covers make any noticeable difference in heat level on the coils.

An experiment would be to install a couple of temperature probes inside the bank 1 and bank 2 coil cover area. First verify that both banks run at about the same temperature. Now take the bank 1 cover off and leave the bank 2 cover on. Drive around and see if the two temperatures are noticeably different. (I would say it would need to be 20 degrees or more to be worth while.)
