What is the recommended degree thermostat most everyone goes with for a Mark? 160 degree or higher? Does a cooler stat really help these cars with daily driving?

I use a Napa 180 degree in both the Mark VIII's, if I had to get another one it would be a Hypertech 160 because even though it's 160 it won't make your car run at that temperature...

I have the 160* HyperTech.

You may want a 180* IF you drive in the great white north.

Either way, in most driving conditions it will run normal temps, the T-stat opens at the set temperature and your engine load vs. cooling system efficeincy will determine operating temperature.

Did you notice any loss in gas milleage when switching to the 160 tstat? I lost almost two mpg when I changed to a 180 in my vic along with colder plugs.

only if the PCM is programmed to read a 160

So I won't be able to use a 160 if I don't have a tune for it? I was hoping to put one in just in case.. because it usually runs about 90-105 in the summer here... I just want to make sure that the heat and my heavy foot doesn't make a problem.. that way I can run a little cooler...

I use a sniper tuner and all it asked was what temp I would like the fans set at. It didnt have an option for an aftermarket t-stat.

That's all you need to do tune wise if you get a colder t-stat is set the fans to come on earlier. There's nothing else that can be done ECU wise with a colder t-stat. BTW, Ford doesn't make OEM 160 degree t-stat so im not sure what you got from Max, Mespock.

I thought the Aviator used a 160 degree stat. What is stock anyway? I forget.....

I use 160 degree T-Stats from Max at 5 star.

i just installed a 160 degree hypertech today and a new coolant temp sender. i couln't really get my sender in all the way - but it's in 90% of the way. i filled it up with good old h20 because of the spring season. I really should have added some water wetter, im going to do that later today. Running around town traffic light driving - my coolant temp sensor goes to the M. Not sure where it was before because my coolant temp sender was bad (the one for the guage on teh dash).

ive read that some never move past the L. i dont know whats going on? but hey im not over heating!

i filled the resevoir all the way with water, closed resevoir.... opened the fill tube on by the alt - filled with water all the way as to let out the air in the system, closed it - checked fill level on resevoir A ok! no leaks!
ran with the heater on to make sure no air bubbles.

You should NOT run plain water. Period. Engine is designed for a 50/50 mix so use it. Coolant not only prevents corrosion, but lubricates the water pump too.

Well if its tap water you can kiss the radiator good bye, the minerals - even in city water -can do some nasty work. If you have to use water only distilled is safe.

You still hae to burp the sytem several times at the crossover tube. Also water wetter will not drop a degree.

thanks gene! ok, oh and if your crossover tube 1/4 ratchet female is stripped or wont budge, i used a grips to lock around it, worked like a charm.

when you say burp.. you mean just open it up, add water to the cross over... as necessary? how many times - several 6-8 times?
