What does it mean when your cooling fan won't come on unless you unplug the coolant temp sensor? Bad coolant temp sensor?

Normally I know it's supposed to kick on if A/C is engaged or the coolant hits a certain temp. Right now it just won't ever come on. Unplug the coolant temp sensor and it runs at max speed all the time, so the fan itself is good.

Fan will only come on when ac clutch is engaged. If your system is low on freon or has another issue keeping the clutch from engaging, the fan probably won't run. And has the car overheated, or you just think the fan should have ran at some point. It's awful cold where your at.

The temp gauge has never normally gone beyond M in Normal. All of a sudden lately it climbs beyond that, though like you said it's so cold it hasn't had a chance to actually overheat. I suppose I could see if it actually overheats but it just seems like odd behavior.

Possibly you have a thermostat thats starting to stick, or not work quite right. If you replace the stat only use a Motorcraft.

I don't think so, I already had that problem. Replaced thermostat (Motorcraft, checked that it worked before installing) and water pump in May. It also isn't acting like when the thermostat was sticking. When that did happen the temperature gauge rose much more rapidly, pinged at the red, and then rapidly decreased like the thermostat suddenly blew open. This is much more subtle rise, stays low when moving, but rises when stationary.
