i have a 97 mark viii and i recently noticed acoolant leak coming from the water pump area. any ideas on how to fix it or can it be fixed before the motor gets messed up and the temp gauge itsnt climbing its just that warning sign after 10 minutes of driving ......HELP

Yes... I am... I have seen it where the casting is eaten away and there is a void where it leaks from. JB weld can actual make a very sound repair on this type of damage.

wow i looked on ebay and i was just going to replace the water pump in about 3 days... ut if i can save 60 bucks and spend 8 then i ll think about it LOL

If the leak is coming from the hole drilled into the pump case, JB Weld isn't going to help you.

I guess I should have reafirmed that you need to deduce if the pump is leaking from the pump shaft OR from around the pump housing... it sounded from the way you worded it initially that it wasn't the pump itself that was leaking...

meaning your getting it for 68? i got mine from auto zone for round 40

40.00 and was it an easy job what all would have to do inorder to replace the water pump

I read this three times.. and it still doesnt make sense.

Can you try again in actual english with some semblance of grammar?

I'm not a grammar nazi, usually I can figure out what people are saying.

THAT SENTENCE.. FAILED.

Oh I thought he'd already bought a pump and.. the rest..well uhm.. I struck out.

changing the water pump is ST00pid easy.
There are no accessories bolted to it, like ford used to do..hell there isn't even a "hose" connected to it..

hardest part of the job is gonna be refilling the cooling system afterwards.

pretty much it's gonna be.
Loosen, but dont remove the water pump pulley bolts (4 of them)
Then remove the belt and finish removing the water pump pulley.
Then take the bolts out of the water pump
Pull, wiggle and cuss at the water pump as you try to coax it out of the block.

Lube the water pump O ring gasket with Antifreeze and put the new pump back in.

When you buy the new pump, look at the impeller.
if you see exposed fins, dont get that pump that is the "old non improved style".
Look at the 04 navigator pump...it should be a direct replacement and should have the same improved impeller design as the 99-02 cobra.

Beware there are two different mod motor pumps, one has a long shaft and one has a short shaft.
I "believe" all the mark 8's were short shaft.

If I remember correctly I put the 99 cobra pump on mine..it has the improved impeller.

The improved impeller has a plate covering the "fins", this reduces cavitation and parastic loss while increasing coolant flow.

hope this helps

thank you for the information everyone ill be attacking thison monday thank you

When you get ready to remove the old pump..it's gonna be in there "pretty good".
I had to whack the snout on mine with a mallet a couple of times before it started to work itself out of the block.

Be prepared for it to be kinda tough at first, it's normal.
The tolerances between the pump housing and the block/timing cover are very tight... dont get it cocked to one side too much or it'll jam up in there.

again I hope some of this helps.

what kind of water pump will i need seriously i dont wanna get the wrong one

If you have doubts...
take your old pump off and take it with you to the auto parts store.

The main thing you want to look out for is overall pump height when they are laying side by side with the pulley part of the pump facing up.

There is a "short pump" and a long pump.. just make sure the one you get is the same height as the one you take out.

IF you are concerned, then just tell them you want a water pump for a Lincoln Mark 8 and put it in.

where in the damn drain plug for the coolant?i have the alternator off and looking for the drain plug

Jumpin jimeny thats another old thread!

Good grief. The drain plugs are ALWAYS on the radiator. And if not, just disco the lower rad hose.

Too bad you didn't use some good old JB on Stacks car....it would be done by now. :D
