Can anyone tell me what is sitting on the plastic tray that hangs under the rear shelf? I know the JBL amp is there and the compass module, but there are also 2 relays that are for something. What are they for? I want to remove the tray to make a little more room when I install my new sound system, I don't need it, but I wanted to know what those other relays are. I have seen in some other links that the compass module can be moved to under the rear seat, so that is my plan, I am just not sure about what to do with those relays.

From Driver's side to passenger side:
Compass, cell phone module, hard and soft ride relays, shock damping control module, radio amp.
Hard and soft ride relays are for the early type OEM rear shocks.
I don't see how there is enough room under the rear seat for the compass module. Judge for yourself. Push seat base back (i.e. toward rear of the car) and lift.

Isn't there something to do with the steering rack under there too? To reduce power to the rack as speed increases?
I may be thinking of the SuperCoupe/XR7 models, but I thought the Mark8 had this as well, in that rear tray.

Mine is gone. I think there was only one module I had to mount to the inside of a rear wheel well. Everything else came out.
FYI the compass module is in there from 94 or early 95 down. In late 95 and 96 is moved to the rear view mirror.

Here's what I figured out. On that tray is two relays for the ride height control - air shocks, the compass module, another module for the ride height (I think) and of course the amp (if you have the JBL). If you had a phone you have another module for it, mine did not. So I removed the tray and the amp. I disconnected the ride height module because mine have been replaced with springs, I did not get any new error messages. I left the 2 relays connected, so I coiled them up and out of the way. Then I unwrapped the tape from the compass wires and moved it down under the passenger side seat. There is plenty of room for it under there, just watch out that the metal bar under the seat does not crush the module. Seems to be fine. Now the room I lost by adding the 10" sub has been gained by tossing the tray.
Nothing to do with air suspension ride height. The two relays and that module are for the shock absorber damping. (during normal driving, the damper is soft, under hard braking, damper setting changes to hard, to reduce dive) If you still have original shock absorbers, then you should keep those components connected.
When you get (or if you already have) later, or aftermarket shock absorbers, then you can remove those relays and module. (due to later shocks having improved, built in anti-dive mechanisms)
