I am thinking I am going to go ahead and get my coils redone, just because I am not sure when they were done last by the previous owner, my mechanic said the best way to go about it is to put in Coils made by Motorcraft, however I am wondering, does anyone think there are better and more reliable coils out on the market for the 02 v8.

AFAIK, the newest rev of the Motorcraft are the best. However, the lower priced Visteon coils seem to be about as good.

i wouldnt bother replacing them until they start to go... do you have any symptoms?

I would normally say buy the oem, stuff but since the cars came with oem and they oftentimes fail quickly, i would recommend the bwd/intermotor coils from advance auto because they come with a lifetime warranty. use code "a123" when checking out online and buy each coil seperately to maximize your discount.

I wouldn't worry about it until you actually have a problem that requires replacing one or more coils. When that time comes, the general consensus is to go with Visteon on eBay.

+1 on waiting till one starts missing, then change them all. I've been using Visteon for more then 25k and so far not a problem.

And change the spark plugs at the same time.

Well the only thing is, this may sound dumb, I have never been through coils failing so idk what its gonna feel like, in general I am already deceived because this car has a substantial amount more power then my previous car(99 VW Passat v6).

I think that it's better for you to maybe waste a little money by replacing them now, than it would be for you to wait until you have catalytic converter damage from slight misfires that you didn't realize were there.

+1 on that joegr,

I'm at that point, had a slight misfire, didn't know it was there until the Bassani's went on then I really noticed it,
now worried more about clogging the CAT's.

Can't get the Visteon Coils, near impossible. low stock and some won't ship to Canada (again)

I might go Accel coils ... or some lower grade, more available and see where it goes.
Someone offered me "BlueStreak" but after reading up on those, same complaints.
Premature failure.

I'm currently not driving the LS at this time, misfire is now permanent, needs coils & plugs.

BRL so finally wich coils are you going to get?i m in the same situation and dosen t find same visteons !!!!!!!!!!!

Funny story, I have replaced only ONE coil on my Mark8 since I owned it. It has over 153K miles on it now and I bought it at 72K miles. All of the other coils appear to be original. As spirited of a manner as I drive my car, I'm convinced that the next failure is going to be catastrophic and likely the remaining 7 old coils all at once. LOL

LOL

I purchased my Mark with 54k, has almost 98K on it now.

@ 54K i pulled and inspected all coils, all were original and looked brand new, I replaced the spring inside the boots but left all boots and coils original. I often think about my coils falling also however I bought an entire lot of 8 used coils in great shape off ebay for like 25 dollars 2 years ago "just incase"

Selling parts for many years I have to also say, Motorcraft on the coils...

Indeed. And my situation is good proof of that. I'm fairly certain that I am still rocking 7 original Motorcraft coils at over 153K. ;)

Amazon is currently out of stock, Alanisdeals is not willing/able to get any more.

Managed to locate two others that have them,
one replied they just ran out of stock (for Canadians),
the other in Brooklyn, NY won't ship to Canada.

:: still scratching head over LS coils.

May have to go and pay for stockers or get a fricken USA address,
which I might be able to pull off for out of Watertown, NY.

Plenty of Visteon coils out there, just not the ones I need of course!

Welp, if you can't get the coil why not at least pull the spark plugs and replace them. At least check the gap as it grows over time and the larger gap is harder for the coil to fire across.

Thanks a ton man, I was too busy looking for the VIS 60-1008's
(and was still trying)

Those on Amazon are half the price the dealer wants for them
and only 16.75 more then the Visteons.

Good deal, good enough anyhow.

thanks again Joegr, much appreciated.

;)

Ouch, Amazon is killing the shipping cost to Canada, $82

Found the Motorcraft DG529 coils on rockauto.com for CAD$44.81

Promo discount code: D0D6CC4BB247
add to field "How Did You Hear About Us?" in the shopping cart on checkout.

Ground shipping to Canada was CAD$26.09

... more reasonable

thanks

EDIT: picked up a new MAF aswell. good price on Standard product quality.

i casually disagree with the 'replace now' recommendation; i think you will have plenty of signs indicating failing coils prior to a clogged cat... an incomplete list of symptoms follows:
shuddering/studdering under load (into 3rd, into 5th, up a hill, yada yada)
decreased throttle response
slightly harsh shifts
throttle codes (even tho throttle isnt the issue, coil is issue)
various forms of limp mode (wrench light on dash)
misfire causing CELs/DTCs
permanent misfire
exhaust that smells rich

just curious, to the pro-visteon crowd: how many miles have you put on them w/o going out of spec? any failures caused by wear and if so how many miles after install?

Here's a laugh from another LS forum:
"The problems with COP's, COP boss seals, and a bad Cowl was resolved before 2003. "

If only that were true...
