Ok, the above is the standard setup for a Gen 1. There was a change in coil pack numbering, but its the same in the end.

There are only FOUR trigger wires because two plugs always fire at the same time. One for combustion and then a "wasted" spark to burn off any residual fumes.

In the above setup the pairs are 1&6, 3&5, 7&4, 8&2. If you look at a coil pack you can see easily how this is setup. The harness of each coil pack has three wires. The center is a positive power feed the outer ones are the trigger wires. You can basically splits the coil pack in half to also see the pairs.

Now to convert to COP you will need four positive power leads to four of the eight COPs. These can be shared to reduce wiring but I advise running each back to the main harness to tap a larger gauge positive power lead. There are several in the main harness, all red and thicker gauge than others.

For the trigger wires you wire these in corresponding pairs in SERIES. So you take the 1/6 trigger and run the trigger wire to number 1 on the NEGATIVE terminal then from #1 POSITIVE terminal around to number 6 NEGATIVE terminal where it will end. On number 6 the remaining POSITIVE terminal goes to one of the four leads noted in the above paragraph. You CAN reverse this oder and go from 6 to 1 if need be, it does not matter.

Here is an example of how each is run: (the trigger wires ARE not the correct colors, you will have to determine that when you look at your connectors at coil pack)

Did Mike txt everyone about this? lol....

If I ever bought a first gen this would be a high on my list.

And if you ever do this you MUST solder each connection. I very much recommend heat shrink tubing also.

Unity,

I'm having a hard time seeing how that would work with the individual coil packs. How can you have a large power wire AND the trigger wire for each coil?

Or am I just missing something?

Mike

Yes. The positive lead is shared/grouped.

No benefit except cleaning up the engine bay.

Meh,

I don't see it that way John.

I prefer the COP ignition setup........I suppose that is why I am converting. I have 20 Spare Coils and as many Spare boots. I'll be good for a few misfires.

Well,

I was gonna post something that made me look like a complete electrical moron, but I figured out what you were saying at the last minute. I'm in the process of scuffing the new cam covers for paint.

HOPING to install them this weekend.

I need to get Lonnie on the horn to have a chip burned for the ol' girl, so it'll be running RIGHT for the Beach Party.

Use the above chart (in text, not he graphic) and compare to the harnesses that connect to the packs. Unless ya cut em off already. Also sent PM.
