I had a misfire so I opened the passenger cover and removed the coils.. oil in the front 2 pretty bad and the back 2 a few drops..

I replaced the seals as per the tech article (big thanks for that).. cleaned up the boots with brake cleaner and put electric grease on the end of the springs and put back in - still misfire.

Since the first 2 coils were drenched in oil I figured I would replace each one individually to make sure it wasn't just one. I replaced the first one in the row.

Helped a little but still misfire.

The engine light came on so I had advanced auto pull the codes and it said o2 sensor - So I replaced the one after the manifold and one of them after the converter - still misfire

The engine light came on again took it to advanced and they said it was coil misfire.

My question is this - should I replace the 2nd coil or take it to a diagnostic and see what it says. The guy at advanced said his machine couldn't tell me which cylinder it was misfiring. Also, could the spark plugs be ruined since oil was touching them? Is there a way to find out which cylinder is misfiring without paying $80 for a diagnostic machine?

Thanks in advance - this forum is awesome and has been a big help over the past 2 years with this car.

Happened to me, replaced three of them, misfire gone.
Of course the car's gone now, but def replace the second one. Sometimes they short out due to the oil impeding the electrical flow... Did you have water marks on the ones in the back, like orange oxidized color? Did you check all of them? If not, I recommend you do. I found a little surprise when I checked the passenger side. It was ready to go as well.

As far as the plugs, it might be a good time to replace since you're already there but they don't always go with the coils. Again, I would just buy the second coil and try it. It's less than $50 and you can return it if that's not it. Chances are that is it, IMO.

I'd like to know where you are getting them for less than $50 (my last one was $80).. my thing is I might be trading the car in and I don't want to spend what I don't have to (the diagnostic)..

About the spark plugs - I just put these in about 20,000 miles ago (maybe 25k).. they are still under warranty and I got them from advanced auto and the guy said I could bring them back and replace if they are bad. I did check the gap on each one but a buddy of mine said his car (honda) was leaking oil due to valve cover seals and he put in new plugs and it fouled them out and had to replace them that is what triggered my though on the new spark plug. I'm just thinking maybe I can replace those 4 plugs for free and not have to get the 2nd coil pack.....?

Check our sponsor links on the side for 5 Star Ford and Team Ford, both places can get you coiles for under $50. Local auto parts stores carry them as well.

Advanced Auto sells them by me for $48 with a 1 year warranty. Im gonna go buy 8 and return them as defective every 11 months and 29 days, haha.

+1 on advanced auto. $48 a piece. $80? bet is the dealer...
usually the oil don't make it to the electrode, but if they'll replace them under warranty, go for it, otherwise I'd just use brake cleaner and be done with it.

advanced auto told me $70 vs dealer $75 (**correction** just called and they said $51 - they told me $70 last time.. lol) so I went with OEM parts for an extra $5. Your saying you don't think it's the coil ? There was oil on the spring pretty heavily in fact it's kind of bronze instead of the silver the new one is. Oil is all inside the boot. Is it a possibility that oil still didn't get into the electrode?

NOPE. I meant the spark plugs, def replace that coil. What part of the world are you in? Just called advance and quoted me $43.99 for part #601008. Even the motorcraft oem is $63.99 part #DG515.

Or if you have time to wait, get it from one of the sponsors and help them out, they help you out with price too.

I got one for $45 from Autozone, vs. the Dealer cost of $75 a pop.

The electrode is the part of the spark plug that sparks. Its not part of the coil.
Just to clarify.

If the second coil was flooded with oil replace it. Even if its just a preventative measure.

Did you check the plugs on the drivers side?

thumbs up!

just wanted to let anyone needing coils know that the ebay seller listed above has a great deal going. I bought one coil, it came fast, included the boot, and worked out well.

Through a little trial and error/ swapping I was able to figure out which coil was bad and now I'm running pretty smooth again. Feels like another coil may be starting to go, so I'm going to grab another one from them.:)
