Well fellas, this is the follow-up from the fuel smell in my 2004 Lincoln LS. I took the car back to the dealership as most of suggested. They gave me another rental for the weekend and keep the car. I was notified that the fuel tank was inspected and the fuel smell came from defective O rings on the tank. The dealsership replaced the fuel tank with the O rings. I pick the car on Monday from the dealership after they admitted to the tech not checking his work prior. On Tuesday I recieved a massage on the dash stating check fuel cap. I took car back to dealership and after a few hours they were unable to find the leak in the car and put me in another rental. In short, since my fuel pump was supposedly replaced three weeks ago I have dealt with strong fuel smells in car(currently corrected), check engine light on(currently corrected), check fuel cap massage, 4 car rentals and I have been to the dealership a total of 5 times in which a problem was always found but never completely corrected. My main concern is that now my beautiful Lincoln will always be defective and have problems that never existed prior. Please help with suggections, options, opinions on how to handle problem and dealership.

Maybe take it too a dealership with techs that know what the hell they are doing?

+1 If you get techs that can fix the problem correctly then you're good to go. The problems you're experiencing aren't that bad, it could be worse. You're just suffering from a sorry dealership.

that sux man. i agree crappy dealership, although evap leaks can be a PIA, i just fixed a navi that no one could figure out, hes had this problem for 40k!!!!!!

call better business bureau or call ford directly and tell them your problem. just break their balls till they offer you something. the BBB works but it takes a bit longer.

this is very very common - like we said in your other thread

They are having trouble getting the plastic lock nut on properly, or the gasket became displaced when they were fighting with it. Therefore the tank wasn't sealed and you smelled the fuel - worse when you filled up or cornered hard.

The error code you got was most likely a would you see a 'P1457' - Unable To Pull Fuel Tank Vacuum

- which is usually a loose gas cap - but in your case it the same issue - the lid of the pump is not sealed and therefore the tank cannot pull vacuum - which messes up several things (emissions and unstable pressure in a returnless fuel system).

So it is likely the same issue that you returned it for the first time....

yep, i can vouch that it takes at least 10 minutes to line the threads up properly. perhaps they scratched it so it can't make a good seal or they stripped/crossthreaded the threads.
im sure the dealer will continue to beat around the bush and take $$ from ford. they could have replaced the whole fuel system by now for less.

ask to see the condition of the cap, and the threads on the tank. inspect for scratches. watch them put the thing back on to make sure its right. it should go somewhat easy for a turn or two and then turn into a mother real fast. it then needs to be either tightned more using the tool, or smashed tighter with a hammer and screwdriver (its all about having the right tools!) the notches on the cover need to line up with the ones on the tank too so make sure that doesnt turn as they tighten the ring. holding it down while someone else tightens the ring makes this easier. make sure the lines arent damaged that connect to the top of the module.
