I'm in the middle of trying to change the clockspring but I don't have a star wrench so I need to go get one. does anybody know if trying to crank and drive the car with the airbag removed will work or cause any problems.

if the airbag is completely remove - all that will happen is the the post-ignition SRS test will fail and the SRS system light will come on in the dash.

I drove mine with no steering wheel.
Well sort of, I drove it about 3 feet straight forward to make room for the bay door to close at the shop because it was gettin cold out.
And no it didn't blow up.
Then I drove it for a week with no clock spring at all, which is just as bad as driving with no airbag.

How much was the clockspring and how is the swap. Easy.

Ford dealer, expect to pay about 85 - 100 bucks. The swap is simple enough. Takes maybe about an hour start to finish. I took mine out to test it before ordering the new part.

You can do it, but in most states it is illegal to do it without a special permit.
