Bumper painting question

How do you prep a bumper when the paint is flaking like this?

get another bumper. its not fun sanding a bumper thats cracked that bad, you'll have to go down to the bare urethane and if you dont know what you are doing it will show where you have gone down to the urethane after you paint it.

I know he knows and I know because I have done a few myself and I ain't messing with anything cracked that bad. It's hard enough just doing simple prep but any prep done right isn't simple by any means. Very time consuming if done correctly.

I wouldn't even take that bumper and have it done by a professional. Looking kinda brittle from the pic I see.
 
sand it down...when you think you have all the cracks out wipe it down with some cleaner to get a wet look. You'll be able to see the cracks that you missed. Keep sanding till you get everything out. Then prime it with a plastic adhesion promotor, prime it with a high build, block it, and paint it.
 
and use a two stage paint, do a light base,, but make sure you geet the whole area covered, and then make sure you buy a 2nd stage top coat that is made for bumpers to prevent any cracking next time
 
is that plastic thats cracked? it looks like that bumper was repaired with plastic once before. Is that just paint cracking or is it plastic filler too?
 
I agree with jamie. Its going to be WAYYYY to labor intensive to fix that bumper. Save yourself the time and grief and find another bumper.
 
it can be fixed for sure, but for what its gonna cost in materials and labor i would do nothing with it except cut it in half and throw it away. seriously, lots of things can be fixed, but sometimes common sense must rule over labor!!
 
not worth fixing sorry sucks but i just went though it now i have 2 good ones went to ohio got one come home and had one waiting on ebay and a local junk yard sold me one for a 96 that wont work 200 bones down the drain but thats life
