Um, the ballast was not $880 new, the entire housing and all was - both sides maybe at one point.

This is the combo ballast I think though, both sides mounted together.

I think its funny how these usually dont fail but the rear neon ballast usually does.

You can get ballasts from ebay for about $40. I have never paid over that for a ballast, and i have like 10 of them laying around.

^ I was wondering were they are all going.

I know even the Gen 1 HIDs are not as good as Gen II, but you really think 5 HID lamps per side is not overkill :D

the rear ballast goes bad more often because of moisture problems, water inside the neon shorts the hell out of the ballast. plus its a two stage invertor and it is used way way more then the headlight ballast.

I bought a compete set of gen 1 housing bulbs and ballasts, and the seller threw in 2 new oem bulbs, and 3 ballasts for free, plus the stuff I already had. I have enough :)

IMHO a used ballast is already 10 to 15 years old and one doesn't know if it is going to fail in 6 months, a year, or never, but to only pay $39 more for a brand new one and both sides at that, well it's cheap insurance.
Now to find some OEM, new bulbs, at a good price?

Or just replace all that hard to find old factory crap with brand new parts... let see, $35 replacement bulbs... win!

i agree the factory stuff is outdated, its the wrong power current as aposed to all other H.I.D stuff out there and the bulb problem alone is enough to ditch the whole factory set up. withy so many people making adapter rings to use common aftermarket hid bulbs in the factory housings, why not switch, plus replacement bulbs are dirt cheap and so abundant. if i pick up another gen 2 for myself the first thing i am doing is ditching the factory hid's.
