Bolt broke off in throttle body!!!!!

The bolt that holds down the intake tube broke off in the TB. How criticle is the bolt for sealing the intake? Will this cause me any issues? The rubber seal is not in real good shape, either.
 
It will not work right. You need that to be secure and the seal must be good or it will run like crap. Where did it break off? Right at the TB or at the top of the spindle? Its a bolt within a bolt type setup.
 
No way in hell it will seal properly without that bolt.

If there is a leak down on that tube you can run into some real issues with large amount of unfiltered unmetered air getting into your engine.
 
Well, that explains why it ran like crap this weekend. Anyone have an extra they want to sell?

It broke off flush with the TB. I am going to have to drill it out :(
 
Same thing happened to my old man's car when it was mine - and it wasn't even tightened down a lot. I ran a rubber bungee cord with metal hooks over the top of it and it's been fine for years. lol
 
sounds like, for the time being, you need to McGyver it for now-bungee cords sound like, with a little creativity, you could live with it until you can fix it-is it your daily driver?

here we go again, I am a firm believer that a mark is not a daily driver, because if you are depending on it to go from here to there, you might screw it up-only you know how bad it is, lots of people on here will help you think it through.
 
i have more too, throttle bodies and the bolts. dont drill it, you dont want shavings in the intake, and if you take it off just to drill it, you might as well change it since its off. i wouldnt drill it, but thats just me.
 
Mine did the same thing. Take the throttle body off, only takes a sec. Tap the bolt and drill it out, again only takes a sec. Once its out, find a bolt thats the same thread and size as your broken one. Cut the head off the new bolt and weld it onto the upper piece and there you go. Mine seals perfect everytime and don't have to worry about it breaking again. Just make sure its not longer than your old bolt or it won't tighten down enough to seal it. If it is, just cut more off before you weld it. 10min job.:)
 
Just buy one off Jamie! As for removing it, choose your method but be real careful if you decide to drill it out with the intake intact.

Heck, while you got the TB off you should replace the IAC and save yourself the headache later on :)
 
Why replace and pay for one that will break eventually when you can make one for free that won't break? Either way you go will work fine.:)
 
thanks keith, when you put the new one on, put a little dab of anti seize on the new threads and only snug the bolt, there is no need to crank it on.
and laden no disrespect to you but the hole in the t.b is not very thick around its walls, drilling and tapping and welding bolts together is no way i would fix my car, and if you were my customer i think you would be pissed if thats how i fixed your car, there is nothing wrong with fixing things the correct way when its something cheap and simple like replacing the throttle body. i took care of him, when he gets the new stuff clean and unmolested im sure he'll be glad he spent the money and fixed it right.
 
No sir I think you may have misunderstood how I was describing how to remove the broken off bolt in the throttle body. Use a small tap on the broken bolt, then just back the bolt out. I don't mean to drill a bigger hole to get the bolt out. When I did mine, the bolt backed out perfect. No stipped threads. I'll take a pic in the morning. It's not rigged if thats what you think. It's just 1 complete bolt instead of bolt and a stud.
 
i see what you mean laden i gotcha now.
using an easy out sounds easier said that done, if the original bolt snapped because of how tight it was, there is no way you'll break whats left loose with an easy out small enough to fit into the broken piece, i have tons of easy outs, and i can send pictures of all the ones that you could use for the above said task, and all of them are snapped in half. easy outs work great, if they are big enough, little easy outs cant hold up to a bolt that small that is in that tightly that has snapped, the easy out will bust before the broken stem comes loose.
 
I didn't have a problem getting mine out when I broke it from overtightning. The bolt broke off flush with the top of the throttle body. It came out fairly easily. I personally didn't use an easyout but that is something you could use that would work also.:)
