Hi guys i know this topic has been covered before. (did a search) Just want some up to date info on the best rear shocks for the mark viii, and who to get them from. I did some research for thunderbird ones but there were so many sorts available it has left me confused! Also, will T bird mounts fit ok? I want dampers tuned for a comfy ride to compliment standard height coil conversion. Thanks.

Martin.

Ok, maybe i should elaborate as i really could use some help. On the rockauto parts site it lists one type of shock for the viii, a motorcraft part which is pretty expensive. For the T bird, however it lists these:

motorcraft for std duty susp.
motorcraft lx for models w/out sport suspension.
two types of AC delco.
monroe sensatrac.
monroe monomatic.

All good value, just dont know which one is most suitable for the viii. Am also confused by the upper mounts as i have read stuff about modifying them to work with T bird shocks? If this is the case then there is no point in me buying new top mounts. Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi there Bigboyboelts! I heard these are quite stiff? im after a pair of shocks which offer a comfy ride to match the stiffness of the fronts. If i chose some mustang shocks would they fit ok or would mount mods be needed? Thanks.

Hi tractionless! Im done with shocks i just got the t bird sensatracs from rockauto as they were pretty cheap. I have koni adjustables on my bmw 7 series, with eibach pro kit springs. On that you could adjust the damping on the fronts via a knob on top but the rears involved removing the shock and compressing and twisting to adjust. Very awkward too! I had to replace a koni cos the adjuster had seized. They ent cheap either mine cost 400 bucks apiece! Probably cheaper here in usa though...

I think mine were $280 or less for both shipped. You don't have to remove anything to adjust them. You will hate the Sensacraps after a few months just like I did. They were a complete waste of time/money they get VERY soft over time, like you said "they are cheap".

Yeah the koni design is probably better on the mark. I might upgrade the shocks once these sensa tracs are done. My main priority at the mo is just getting the car on the road. (which is proving a nightmare at the moment!) lol.

Cool. Food for thought when these sensatracs turn bad. Would be nice to one day have adjustables again though...

The Supercoupes had two ride modes. Normal and firm. The ride modes were switched from inside the car, via electric actuators. Basically a little motor on top of each shock/strut that turned a half turn, IIRC and switched the shock firmness.

oh ok i got ya now. Im familiar with such systems in other cars but dont know much about the supercoupe.

I got the koni shocks on my 98. I set it in stiff and man could i feel it. I have it set on soft now and raised the rear end to fit my 255/50/17's. The koni's were a expensive but I like them.

Cant say yet, calabrio as i have only driven the car a couple of times since doing them. Will post and tell you how they are in a couple of weeks when i have sorted my other gremlins and the coil suspension settles abit. However, it said on the box i got them in ' new improved design ' so will see how they go.
