Beating a dead horse: SVT Focus fuel pump, will any work?

I have a 97 stock LSC that has been having issues. When I try to start it in the morning, it takes quite a bit of cranking to fire up. Sometimes it takes 10 seconds or more to fire up.

If I do the cycle the key thing a few times, it will usually fire up if it doesn't fire up after the initial attempt at starting up.

My car also idles roughly at times. Sometimes its smooth but often at idle, it hunts between 500-800 rpms and isn't smooth.

I'm thinking the check ball issue and maybe weak pump. The car has 168k on it so its ripe for replacement anyway.

I want to replace the pump asap with the SVT Focus pump. I have searched and searched and it seems that the SVT Focus pump is the way to go. Eventually I might want to put a mild nitrous kit into my Mark and it appears that the SVT pump can handle mild engine mods.

My question is that can I just go to my local parts store and ask for a 2002-2004 Ford Focus SVT fuel pump and it will work with some minor mods? Or do I need to order one off of ebay or something?

I'm willing to pay 20-40 dollars more to be able to get the pump in the next day or so which is why I would like to go with local. I just don't know if a generic replacement pump from a place like Napa or Schucks or Autozone would work.
 
It requires some mods to fit CORECTLY. There will be a few people that chime in here in a couple minutes saying they have one and it works and it dropped right in yada yada yada. Problem is its shorter then the Mark?Bird pump so it wont grab the last couple gallons of fuel from the tank. So if you are cornering hard on a low tank you will starve the engine.

I have the ebay $78 255lph T-bird pump and its a couple years ols now. Works perfect, very quiet and was cheap. They didnt advertize it as a Walbro but thats what the instructions said it was.
 
So what about the miles to empty indicator on the computer display? Will that no longer be valid? I thought that the short pump was the walbro 255 pump and the SVT Focus pump didn't have the same issues.

I'm not worried about modifying it or anything, I just want the miles and gallons to empty feature to work correctly so my wife doesn't run out of gas somewhere out in nowhere.
 
I have one but haven't let my tank get too low yet... seemed to be exactly the same size as the old pump tho... Didn't hear about this until after I had it back in the car for the 2nd time and the exhaust welded back up tho so not 100 percent...
 
Exhaust welded? Waitaminute. You mean I have to cut the exhaust to lower the tank? I was under the impression, I could just unbolt the exhaust and drop it. Everything on my car is currently stocki.
 
Before you take the time to drop the tank to change your pump do some simple trouble shooting.

Get a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to your schrader valve and see what the fuel pressure is in the morning.

You could go thru all the trouble of changing you pump and still have the same problem.

I have been keeping a fuel pressure gauge in my trunk. In the morning, it has been at zero. When I cycle the key once, it jumps to about 30 and then falls back down to about 28 or so. If I leave it alone, it will fall to like 10-15 in about 15 minutes.

When it finally starts up, it will hover around 30.

If I goose the throttle, it will barely move to 31 and then while the engine is revving, it will fall to 27-28.

To me that sounds like a bad check valve and/or a weak pump.

Yep.
I installed a walbro fuel pump 255lph bought from summit.
The basket needed some modifying but nothing too out of hand.
The wires need to be switched.

Mine leaves about a gallon and a half in the tank when it reads empty.
