Battery smoking WTF

Hey everyone,

I left work today and as soon as I got down the road a bit the battery light came on and the media center said to check the charging system. I pop the hood and everything seemed ok. The I started to smell rubber burning and pop the hood again and the battery was started to smoke and looked like it burning at the top. Oh and the EATC kept turning on and off and the air bag light keeps flashing. Car has ran just fine and no issues. Has anyone had this problem? Help!!!!!

The battery is out of the car because it was bubbling and hot and I am afraid it might explode. The top of the Ortibal 6 battery is discolored. Terminal wires look fine. Has this battery just died on me? I thought it was stuck in the tray but I got it out.
 
could be a few things, battery could of shorted internally, alt could be overcharging, or the car could have a serious short
 
If it has a short wouldn't the lead to the battery also be hot and the insulation be discolored? I drove it home and shut it down and started it backup. Were should I start to check for a short?
 
I took the battery to the AZ and tested as a good battery but at the end of its life. Would start the car when it was warm but if it was cold it would not start the car. Hope that this didn't hurt my alt. I just brought this battery a couple years ago so looks like I will be visiting NAPA in the morning. Thanks for all you help.
 
Well, I have to start somewhere and it looks like the battery becasue of it's condition. When I put in the new battery I will have to have it tested.
 
The alternator is easy to remove, I'd get it tested before putting the new battery in so you don't cook it either ;)
 
yes they do, and starters... why do you people keep going to AZ tho... omg, i would rather have my car looked at by wal mart than them
 
Well for one reason and the only one right now is that they can test and they are in walking distance. Ha Ha on the Walmart.
 
I`ve had that happen in the past on an older Ford, external regulator. It was shot, overcharged the battery.
 
I will be sure the have the alt check before I put in a new battery. I will let you all know the outcome.

Well, I got the altenator tested this morning and it was cooked along with the plug and the regulator cooked the battery. The plug to the regulator will have to be replaced. I guess I should look at the big picture becasue it could have been worse. I check the fuse box and none of the wires are burned and they look fine but I am sure that this is not a good thing.
 
I was figuring bad regulator on the alt. In the future you can get a cheap voltage tester and just check the voltage. If its over 14.6v when running then that shows a bad regulator, under 12.5volts will show a bad alt when running, voltage under 12v when off will indicate a bad battery assuming its charged.
