First, the battery lamp refers to the charging system.
Components are:
Battery
Alternator
Regulator (mounted inside the alternator)
Any one, or all three of these could be lighting the battery lamp.
You need to have the system tested to determine which components are defective.

probbaly need an alternator. I had the batt light come on in my 89 Crown vic and it was the alt.
