I have been doing a bunch of searches, haven't found the info I need yet, I have a 2000 ls v8 that needs help, It broke the tensioner on the drivers head and snapped the chain resulting in 2 bent valves, I was pricing at ford just 2 chains, tensioners and VC gaskets I was looking at over 450-500$ in just parts and that is my discount, then I found the bent valves, I have no idea what that would cost, gaskets, 2 valves, machine work etc etc. I have located 2 60k engines for 1200$ is this a good deal, and has anyone on hear pulled one of these motors out the top, or do I have to drop it out the bottom, I really don't see why it can't come out the top, dropping it just plain looks like a PINA. thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how you can get bent valves without some damage to the head as well, so you'll want to check it carefully. I recall reading here about someone pulling the engine from above, but I don't recall any details...

it is designed to be removed from the bottom.

If you pull it from the top - you will have to remove much more of the front - rad, ac, ....etc

the valves bent by hit the piston head - right? so likely that piston is marred.

just make sure the engine you are swapping is the same model year - or at least the same generation.

I would say if you've found a used replacement for $1200, go that route. As quik said; your piston (aluminum) is bound to be damaged from the valve (steel)... Generally, when a harder metal contacts a softer metal at high speed, the softer metal gets a pretty serious dent put in it, and without the ability of the harder metal to rebound, the energy must be absorbed through the metal (hense the bend). So you're looking at, the absolute minimum, atleast 1 new slug, new valve(s), valve guide install, full gasket kit, timing chains/tensioners... I do not see this being less than the $1200 for the used engine.

On the up side... you'll have a 3.9L that's just asking to be rebuilt for a blower...

I think I am definitely going used engine route, Then at least I will have some extra parts, like sensors and coils, Think I will probably get new VC gaskets while I am at it, I have done a lot of engine swaps just never an LS, Tho I am doing a camaro engine later this week, a 3.8L and I do planning on taking it out the top and it too is suppose to come out the bottom but I have talked to gm guys saying they come out the top just fine. guess I am going to learn a few new techniques.

I still haven't gotten around to swapping engine, but a customer just towed in a 2000 ls with a knocky knocky w/ only 100k on it, he still owes 8000$ on the car. I pulled the lower oil pan and found lots of silver and bearing material, I am really starting to think i don't want to own mine anymore. I still have not seen any pics of taking out engine out, do I lift body off with hoist or what?

Looking at buyig another LS for the winter time. It also has a bent valve in it. How hard would the engine swap be? could you do it in one day? With out a hoist. The guy tells me that the body is mint and its a 2001 Lincoln ls Sport with the v8. Its also black in colour. Could I use a 2002 premium engine? Is there anything else I should now before I buy this car and tackle this job. He is selling for 4700 I am going to offer him 3500 and go from there. I want to get it up and running for 1500 plus the price of the car.

Does anybody know if a 2002 v8 will fit the same as the 2001 v8.?

I would think an 02 engine would work in an 01. If you find anything to be different, swap the parts over. The block and heads should be identical (in theory... quik, you agree?)

Unless you have a team of power-lifters, I don't see how you would remove the engine from the car without a hoist or cherry picker or something! Fully dressed engine has to weigh in the ballpark of 500-700lbs.

If you do this, let me know... I'll take that engine off your hands! I'm interested in seeing if it could be rebuilt using modified off the shelf parts (example: connecting rods that are close to spec can be off-set ground or thickness shaved, valves stems can be cut short and re-grooved for locks, larger diameter guides can be installed).

Well The customer finally came up with the money, What a pain in the rear, I have never had to disassemble so many things to pull an engine, lower struts, upper balljoints, the complete exhaust system to remove the 2 driveshafts, then the 20 bellhousing bolts, 8 torque converter bolts, 2 freakin power steering pumps, jeese Also has anyone actually rebuilt one of these motors, Ford does not acknowledge rebuilding them, I heard the bottom end has to be set in like a jig or something, there are no actual main caps but a lower half of an engine and 2 oilpans.

It was a paint sstripping it down for the scrap yard afterwards.
I ended up getting the car for 3300. motor 1200. (had 30k on it out of a 2002 mine is a 2001) and about anothe 3000 in other stuff. All fluids (including a tranny flush), fan belt, valve cover gaskets, a tiny rad hose that cost a fortune (my own fault)plugs, both lower ball joints, stabalizer link, both wheel bearings, starter, converting to electric cooling fan, replacing bulbs, and new floor carpets. So all n all about 7500. But she runs good now.

the dealer did my engine swap from out the top in about a day and a half. it was a used engine for about $1200.

In some cases, the parts are easily come by. For example, the rods are almost sbc. Turn the crank to 2 inches, and have the rods bushed to fit the pins. (Use 6" rods and offset the bushing to get exact rod length.) Or, since aftermarket 6" X sbc is readily available, order them to exact length instead of 6". That's what I've done.
BTW, the engine weighs under 500 pounds.

the dealer did my engine swap from out the top in about a day and a half. it was a used engine for about $1200.

Just wondering, did you have the 3.9 or 3.0 v6, the v6 looks easy to come out the top, thats why I came to this forum to begin with everyone on here said that it would not come out the top, so I did it by the book, I am not sure how I could have gotten to the top bellhousing bolts without first taking out the tranny, but than that really would not have been saving any time.

mine's a v8. i told the dealer i thought it was supposed to come out the bottom but they took it out the top instead. don't know how big a deal it was though.

$1200 sounds like a pretty good deal to me. The engine and transmission are mounted to a "cradle" of sorts that comes out through the bottom with a lot less trouble than lifting the engine by itself out the top.

Does anybody know if a 2002 v8 will fit the same as the 2001 v8.?
Same engine, they should swap directly with no trouble.

Well It has been a while, but a little over 2 years now and after a month of screw it its getting done, I pulled the head, fixed the valves put both secondary tensionors on. runs like a dream, had airbag light on, it called left airbag open, I found a broken wire to the airbag going to driver seat airbag, all I can tell you now is that both my power pumps are now only held on by 3 bolts apiece.

i found this ls for sale on craigslist been trying to get info on swap i know everry ls owner would love to do this to there babys. http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/cto/1533723540.html

have for sale my 2000 lincoln ls , has been modified with a mustang gt engine and trans !!! carberated !!! runs good !!!! looks great !!!! still needs a few things, but runs and drives fine !! call 239-980-0935 needs temp gauge fixed and ac needs recharged !!!! trade for mustang gt or 4x4 truck or motor home???

well - hope you live in a place that allows it... most states it is illegal to swap a older year engine into a car, for both emissions and DOT - and still maintain your street legal status.

In california he could do that BUT the engine would be smogged to 2000 model year emission standards. And if you put a newer engine in then it would smog to the newer engines standards.

Replacement Engines
Entire engines can be replacement parts. As with any other replacement part, the engine must be identical to the original. If the replacement block or engine is obtained without emissions equipment, all the equipment from the original engine must be installed on the replacement block.
If the engine is not identical to the original then it is not a replacement part, instead it is considered an engine change.
Engine changes are a modification that must meet certain requirements to be legal (please see "Engine Changes").

Japanese Replacement Engines
Used engines imported from Japan can be used as replacement engines as long as the engine being used has been identified as functionally identical to the original engine. Please refer to the engine importers catalogue to determine if a replacement engine is legal for installation in your vehicle.

Engine Changes
Engine changes are legal as long as the following requirements are met to ensure that the change does not increase pollution from the vehicle:
The engine must be the same year or newer than the vehicle.

The engine must be from the same type of vehicle (passenger car, light-duty truck, heavy-duty truck, etc.) based on gross vehicle weight.

If the vehicle is a California certified vehicle then the engine must also be a California certified engine.

All emissions control equipment must remain on the installed engine.

Vehicles converted to 100% electric drive, with all power supplied by on-board batteries are considered in compliance with the engine change requirements. All fuel system components must be removed prior to inspection. For additional information contact the ARB helpline at (800) 242-4450

After an engine change, vehicles must first be inspected by a state referee station. The vehicle will be inspected to ensure that all the equipment required is in place, and vehicle will be emissions tested subject to the specifications of the installed engine.

Judging by just what you can see thats a older 302. GT 302s have had aluminum valve covers since 86 I believe. Thats probably older than that, but just a guess.
