I used to do it every now and then with my old 88 Formula. The only piece of advice I have is to get there early and walk the course. Every time I'd go, I'd always wake up late and not have that chance. It makes it a TON easier to find your way through the cones when you walk it first. Trying to figure out which way you have to go without being able to makes it pretty funny for everyone watching - especially if you do like me and get frustrated, stop the car in the middle of the course and yell out to the people working it "which @#^$#^% way do I have to go?!?!":D

in my experience...
the driver is always the weakest link in the deal ;)

but for mods - I would do these in order
- tires - the widest, best dry traction you can afford
- brakes - the best pads you can get - grip and no fade
- then suspension - I lowered the car, then stiffened it with spring rubbers. But be careful, you can really change the understeer/oversteer balance.

one other tip...

lock yourself very very tightly into the seat. It makes a HUGE difference in your ability to turn.

I use a Shroth setup (DOT legal since it uses factory mounting points, can be ordered with your new BMW or Porsche).

lots of folks use a CG-Lock on their car - http://www.cg-lock.com/ - basically locks your factory seatbelt tight and can be removed for normal driving.
