Hi all. I realize a couple of people have talked about something like this and I did see the one guy did it. Kudos to him. I'm not sure I want to have that finished look, though. Wanted to brainstorm a little here.
The Nexus 7 is too tall to fit properly where the stock HU is currently.

I was thinking of taking the face of the center vent off and making a solid piece (no holes) to put there instead.

I would mount the Nexus by installing a back vinyl cover I have onto the solid face I will fab. The Nexus could then be popped in and out of the cover when entering/exiting the car. It would sit here:

I know many of you thinking, "What about the vents?" Well, I typically put my cool/hot air through my defrost anyway. I feel like it doesn't overly cool/heat the cabin, especially not directly on my face. So it would not be a change or loss for me. I guess another option would be to do the same thing except to the center part (where the HU is) as opposed to the vent. I just like the thought of the screen being higher up so I'm not having to look down so much. I'll be running an rca to headphone jack from the tablet to a mini amp w/remote to control volume, fader, balance, bass, etc. The speakers will be wired directly to the amp as well so either way there will be no need for the stock HU. Thoughts?

In no way shape or form do I think a Tablet can take the place of a nice double din nav unit

Im for anything as long as it looks good. seems like it would be tough to make it seem like it belongs there though.... I remember someone molding one into there center console a couple years ago... may wanna look at something like that...

Any progress with this? I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this myself, for the price of a double din (decent one) with navigation you can install a tablet with way more options. The only thing I can't figure out is how I'm going to make bluetooth phone calls using the tablet.

i would probably start with docking station for the nexus, and i dont think i would ever build a system around the tablet alone, but i could see with a more basic HU. that would at least allow you to retain the SW controls.

This is sort of what I have in mind. With this setup there is no need for an eq or volume remote because the HU supplies that for you, and i get around the Bluetooth issue and if anyone ever drives my car they aren't left without music. My real only obstacle is figuring out how to add a backup camera to this. And I'm trying to buy the docking station but its sold out on google and twice the price on ebay
