So I had set the parking brake the other day got in the car took off drove around for 15 minutes before I relized that I still had it on. Now its making a grinding noise what do I do

Change the rear pads that you smoked....
it's not hard.

Dont feel bad, I drove my first gen with the e brake on for about 10 miles....
the wheels were HOT!

Make sure you got a caliper twist tool, as you CANNOT clamp the rear calipers in.

Otherwise, it's easy :)

My mom smoked the pads in my Vic... no big deal, just replace em and move on.

+1 on having to turn the rear calipers back in, the little tool you can buy for $8-$10 at the auto parts store is pretty much useless...

Whoops, yeah, don't mess around with that POS. Rent the brake kit from the parts store, it is about eight thousand times nicer.

My local place has a $100 deposit for their brake kit, and I get it all back when I return the kit.

Holy crap $100 last time I did them auto zone got me for $30 for the tool

Well that $100 is just like a security deposit, i get it all back so it's basically free :)

Although the one I'm thinking of is the Master Brake Kit that comes with like six hundred different adapters to use with the tool, a vacuum pump thingy, brake bleeder, line bender, etc. They probably have just the tool for less.

my buddy did that to my old 5 speed mark vii

Now if you had a gen 2 you wouldnt have this problem. :p The other day in my gen 2 i pushed the e brake down, then was liek wtf? wheres the realse. DUH, put it in reverse and it popped back up. First time i ever had to use it. lol

That happened to me once in the LS except it's an electronic parking brake and it's supposed to shut off automatically when you put it in gear. Well I felt the brake catching but I just powered the engine through it. I decide to pull over and check it after about 5 miles of this. I get out and one brake is literally glowing red like you see on those GT racecars so I walk to the other side and that one is on fire. So I grab my friends Diet Coke and throw it on the brake.

Had them checked out after and they were perfectly fine. Never found out why the brake didnt disengage either.

I have done this same thing twice. The brake was just a a bit so I didn't notice it. I drove for about 3 miles both times. I couldn't believe that I forgot to take the brake off.

i have a gen 2, every other time i have forgotten to take the ebrake off it always disengaged, except for this time

My gen 2 always disengages when you take it out of park. I drove around a lot in my gen 1 with the ebrake on by accident luckily I only drove about .5 miles each trip

Does a light come on in a gen 1 Mark when you set the parking brake?

Yes the light does come on and a few weeks back I drove a few miles with the ebrake on. My glasses were covering the info center then I saw the red light and disengaged it. Didnt make any noise either

well good news. took to the muffler brake place they took a look wiggled the brake calipers around with a pry bar took it for a test drive no noise :D
but when he took the cover off the rim a broke lug stud fell out has any one ever heard of a lug stud just breaking off???

LMAO. What???

They wiggled the calipers around... And that means your brakes are good? Lol.

Yes, studs breaking is very common. Usually a result of being previously over tightened by bad shops that aren't familiar with torque wrenches.

Had to replace 3 myself. (sheared when loosening)

he said the caliper was a little stuck all good now

I would run away from a shop the wiggled my brake caliper around with a pry bar and called it fixed...

he either released the cable tension (poss stuck) or the slides are stuck, either way if it was grinding it needs new pads and rotors

I'm surprised there's minimal complaints about the electronic parking brake. When I bought mine I looked at the little toggle to activate the brake and thought well that should break or lock up I'd better not use it.

Well, I park on a hill at home and I've been using it every day and it works great.

Plus when the wife uses the car I don't have to worry about her driving for 20 miles with the E-brake on.

I drove for about a minute with my parking brake on and it snapped the cable, now I have to replace the whole cable and dont have a clue how to do it.

I hate to admit it too, but I did that in a brand new BMW M3 once by mistake. ;)
One of the techs had a customers 2-3 month old M3 in for the brakes not feeling right when hot, so we took a new one off the lot to compare them. It turned into a high speed lapping race to get them real good and hot, then we jumped out, switched cars real fast and zipped away to do another lap, then switch cars again to compare the brake feel. After doing this 5-6 times, I jumped in the new one and forgot to release the pb to realize about a minute later and stopped in front of the dealer with a smoking car. It was quite embarrasing and I was cheered by the other techs watching. I got to replace the brakes on the new car. They didn't let me live that down for a little bit, lol...
